Local hunters donate 700 pounds of venison to Food Pantry

Coordinated generosity of Adair deer huntersm efforts of Adair Food Pantry, Foster Graves & Fairplay Meat Processing, and the National Wild Turkey Federation helps enrich diets of many families
by Richard Phelps, treasurer, Adair County Food Pantry
Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

The Adair County Food Pantry received approximately 700 pounds of frozen and processed venison, donated by local deer hunters during the 2007 deer season.

Hunters who donated their deer were pleasantly surprised to learn that the $30 fee that they had planned to pay for processing had been paid by the local chapter of The National Wild Turkey Federation, costing the hunters nothing. "The NWTF was glad to help the local food pantry in this way. It's what we're all about," Ricky Burris of the local NWTF Chapter and coordinator of the effort said.

Fairplay Meat Processing in Columbia was the local business which received and processed the venison. Foster Graves, new owner of Fairplay Meat Processsing, was happy to help the local pantry provide the meat to local families. Fairplay Meat Processing also donated a portion of their processing fee to help with the effort.

Distribution of the processed venison will be handled by the Food Pantry which is open on Tuesdays from 9:00amCT until 12 noonCT at the pantry's location on Office Park Drive.

The food pantry helps approximately 250 families per month with food needs.

The Adair County Food Pantry would like to thank each deer hunter who donated, Fairplay Meat Processing, and the National Wild Turkey Federation for their help in making this program a success this year.
