The 2007 Deer Hunt, Monday, November 26

Report from data at KY Fish & Wildlife
6:39amCT, Monday, November 26, 2007

The modern firearms deer hunting season ended yesterday in Adair County, but the count continues at the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Telecheck Center, and this morning, the count for top spot in this area was tied between Adair and Green County hunters.

  • 1) (Tie) Adair County, 859
  • 1) (Tie) Green County, 859
  • 3) Casey County, 793
  • 4) Cumberland County, 727
  • 5) Metcalfe County, 688
  • 6) Taylor County, 601
  • 7) Russell County, 314
For all of 2006, 1,001 deer were taken in Adair County.

One frequently asked question, "What is the economic impact of deer in Adair County?" is a difficult one to answer. If the meat is worth $4.00 per pound, the Adair County harvest might be in the $300,000-$400,000 range. Comments are welcome.

Hunter safety has been a major issue this year. Five people have been killed in hunting accidents this year, including three on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, alone, according to the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Commission. Though the fish and wildlife people maintain that there are fewer accidents per participant than in contact sports such as soccer and football, they concede that more of the accidents are fatal than in soccer and football.
