Major new oil wells hit on KY 704

By Ed Waggener
ColumbiaMagazine.com story

A new well on the Chattin Chowing farm, Hopewell Acres, on KY 704 between Columbia and Burkesville, may be the best ever hit in the area and is adding focus to Northern Cumberland and Southern Adair County oil exploration, according to reports.

The latest well, Chowning #4, put on pump on November 15, is said to be pumping 85 barrels a day. The well was drilled by Jimmy Reliford of Sparksville, for Hart Oil Company.

Two other Chowning wells are producing at a high level. Chowning #1 is reported to be pumping around 10-12 barrels per day. Chowning #3 is pumping 25-30 barrels every 24 hours.

Altogether, wells on the Crocus Creek Farm are reported to be producing over 120 barrels, which, at today's prices, would bring in over $1 million dollars in three months, if production stays at the reported level of production.

Billy Joe Fudge of Columbia is one of the overseers for the Chowning Brothers, owners of Hopewell Acres. The brothers are emphasizing good stewardship of the land during the extraction process, one of the Chowning Brothers, John, said. "We have a very strong emphasis on cleaning up and restoring the land as the wells are drilled and go into production."

Hopewell Acres is widely known as one of the most beautiful farms in this part of Kentucky.
