Friday, November 16, 2007 is Diabetes Awareness Day

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

Adair County CJE Ann Melton and Columbia Mayor Pat Bell have proclaimed Friday, November 16, 2007, as Diabetes Awareness Day in Adair.

The proclamation is intended to increase awareness of the disease about the risk factors and symptons related to diabetes, including blindness, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and leg or foot amputations.

Destiny Burton, RN, the diabetes educator for the Adair County Health Department, said that while almost 15 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, there are an estimated 6.2 million, over one third more, who are unaware they have the disease.

According to the proclamation, diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States.

In issuing the proclamation, Mayor Bell and Judge Melton urged citizens of Columbia and Adair County to make healthy lifestyle choices, to know about the life-threatening complications and risk factors for diabetes, and to provide care and treatment for those suffering with the disease.
