Gas Price Drumbeat: Calls on Chamber to help

To readers, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

"A Concerned Citizen" is correct in stating that we spend money where gasoline prices are cheaper. After filling up at a neighboring town for 16 cents a gallon less than Columbia's price, I went shopping and bought groceries, shoes, clothes, garden tools, building supplies and pet food.

Researching current members of Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, I did not find local membership for Gate Petroleum, Newcomb Oil Co., IGA (Houchen Industries) or Speedway (Marathon Oil). Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce members need to pay these gasoline suppliers and/or their retailers a visit to explain how our enonomy works. Then, not just "Big Oil" would benefit in Columbia and Adair County.

Ignoring the problem will not make it go away.

s/Vernon York

Note: Thanks for your letter. The Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce is a powerful organization. Perhaps they can weigh in, if, as you say, the traditional higher price differential Adair Countians seem to pay for gas is costing the local economy so much. -EW.
