Obituary: James Rolland Bevell, 82, WWII Navy veteran

Mr. Bevell was of the Methodist faith. He was a 36 year General Motors employee. A Mississippi native, he was the head of a large Adair Co. family. Military rites will be by VFW Post 6097

James Rolland Bevell, 82, a resident of Summit Manor Health & Rehab in Columbia, KY, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2007, at Summit Manor, after a long illness.

The funeral service will be Monday, November 5, 2007, at 11:00amCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY with Rev. Stanley Watson and Rev. Ralph Hadley the officiating clergy.


He was a native of Batesville, MS, born June 4, 1925, the son of the late Parley Pratt and Sallie Lee Gray Bevell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldia Jeanetta (Judy) Gifford Bevell, on March 11, 2005.

He is survived by the following:
  • Eight daughters: Brenda Jones, Martinsville, IN; Linda Grider, Sandy Loy, Ethel Janes, Edna Keltner, and Lois Janes, all of Columbia, KY; Brenda Jones, Delphi, IN; and Marilyn Janes Milltown, KY

  • Nineteen grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and six step grandchildren
One grandchild preceded him in death.

dMr. Bevell was of the Methodist faith. He was a US Navy World War II veteran. He was an employee of General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Willow Springs, IL, for 36 years.

Interment will be in Bennett Cemetery in Fairplay, KY, with military rites by VFW Post 6097, Columbia, KY.

The family requests visiting after 2:00pm Sunday, November 4, 2007, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
