LW Singers and Concert Choir at CBC Nov. 8, 18, 2007 Multi-media performance at Columbia Baptist Church will include choral music accompanied by poetry reading by Professor Carolyn Keefe, and special segment "Brush Strokes" with Glens Fork artist Heather Mayse creating painting inspired by performance With 2 LWC photos & Lindsey Wilson Singers 2007-2008 roster By Duane Bonifer Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story Music has been inspired by many sources. And this month, area audiences will see how music can inspire other forms of art. On Thursday, November 8, and Sunday, November 18, 2007, the Lindsey Wilson Singers and Concert Choir, with conductor Gerald Chafin and pianist Robert Reynolds, will give a concert that includes several multi-media presentations, including the creation of an original painting. Both concerts will be at 7:00pmCT at Columbia Baptist Church. The concert is free and open to the public and is part of the 2007-08 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series. The concert's first half will feature selections mostly from the Renaissance and Baroque eras performed by the 26 members of the Lindsey Wilson Singers. The second half will include a performance by the all-female Concert Choir, and it will feature a poetry reading, multi-media presentation and the creation of a painting. While the Concert Choir performs the song "Brush Strokes," the audience will be able to watch Heather Mayse, an art and human services and counseling senior from Glensfork, KY, paint a canvass inspired by the performance. One reason Mayse was selected to accompany the Concert Choir is because she has a "great sense of how to translate the aural into the visual," Chafin said.Mayse will have about five minutes, 36 seconds to create the painting. "It takes special skills to be able to work in this medium," said Chafin, who is director of choral activities and associate professor of music. "Heather has a great sense of how sound and color blend, and she understands how the music being performed relates to her painting." Before the November 8 concert, Mayse will have "rehearsed" her painting about a half-dozen times with the Concert Choir. She said that she plans to paint a landscape with acrylic paints. "I just went for the words of the song when I was thinking about what to paint," Mayse said. In "God of Wonders," the Concert Choir will be accompanied by a Chafin-created slide show that will express the song's spirit. "I really enjoy the creative process of layering art forms to offer a deeper interpretation of the piece we are performing," Chafin said. During the performance of "If You Were Coming in the Fall," Lindsey Wilson Associate Professor of English Carolyn Keefe will read the poem of the same name by Emily Dickinson. "The poem is thought-provoking and a really beautiful song, and they tie in together," said Molly Atkinson, a Christian ministries sophomore from Louisville, KY, who is an alto in the Concert Choir. The Thursday, November 8, 2007, concert will also serve as a kind of warm-up for Chafin and the Concert Choir. On November 12, 2007, the 45 singers and conductor will participate in the biannual Kentucky Collegiate Women's Choir Festival, which will be held at Asbury College. Chafin, who helped host the 2005 festival at Lindsey Wilson, will be the guest conductor at this year's festival. "It's a professional honor to represent Lindsey Wilson in conducting the mass choir event," Chafin said. "We anticipate approximately 200 voices at the Nov. 12 event, and the opportunity to mold and create their sound is very exciting. I'm very proud of our students and their energy, intensity and passion which shaped this project." The Lindsey Wilson Singers and Concert Choir will perform at 7:00pm CT on Thursday, November 8, 2007, and Sunday, November 18, 2007 at Columbia Baptist Church.
