McGaha brothers bring family history to mind By Frank Dickerson Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story The McGaha brothers added to the Veteran's List reminded me of a bit of family history that may be of interest to others. The three veterans were the sons of Allen and Alta Mae Bryant-McGaha.Two of their other brothers were William Asa, b. 1910 and Ezra Millard McGaha, b. 1912. On Sunday, May 8, 1927, Asa and Millard rode their horses to Barnett's Creek to visit their grand uncle and aunt, William Thomas and Barbara Delilah McGaha-Dickerson, who were my grandparents. The date was the day my parents, T.J. Dickerson and Letha West, were to be married. The McGaha boys accompanied the wedding party to the home of Rev. Jack Cooper, Baptist Minister on Sanders Ridge Road, for the ceremony. I spoke to Millard by phone in January of 1999 and he recalled the day but did not offer any details. In my mind's eye it is fun to visualize the proceedings described by our mother: Mother and Dad in Grandpap's buggy, followed by the Best Man, Elzy Beaty, and the McGaha boys. 80 years ago!
