Ground broken for 5.5 mile section of Columbia-Burkesville Rd Section is in Cumberland County. Project is part of major announcements at Burkesville; will leave only LBN Parkway to Sparksville to be completed, and that announcment is expected between now and election day, Nov. 6, 2007 Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story Governor Ernie Fletcher came through with another promise on the roads systems Adair Countians have been advocating for years, with another stretch of KY 61 between Columbia and Burkesvilled. The Governor and other state and Cumberland County dignitaries broke ground on a project which includes reconstruction of a 5.5-mile section of KY 61 from Jones Chapel United Methodist Church (the one in the Renox Valley in Cumberland County) to a point just south of Scenic KY 704. The Columbia to Burkesville Road will be completely modernized with the construction of the stretch of KY-61 1000 feet South of the Louie B. Nunn Parkway (Cumberland Pkwy) to Sparksville, a distance of 6.35 miles, which is expected to be announced by Governor Fletcher between now and the November 6, 2007, general election. Senate President David Williams (R-Burkesville) applauded Governor Fletcher at the groundbreaking for his commitment to the area. Senator Williams, who was formerly Adair County's Senator before re-districting took the county away, has continued to be an advocate for better roads in Adair County even after Adair County was placed in Senator Vernie McGaha's district. "This is a significant transportation project," Williams said. "Governor Fletcher's support for this project has been critical in moving it forward. As president of the Kentucky Senate, I am honored to work with a man who is committed to going the extra mile to make our state a better place to live, work and raise a family. Furthermore, the investment we are making in an outdoor emergency warning system will help keep our families safe in the event of a natural disaster." Governor Fletcher and Senator Williams were joined by Secretary of Transportation Bill Nighbert, Cumberland County Judge-Executive Tim Hicks, Burkesville Mayor Keith Riddle and other community leaders in breaking ground on the Columbia-Burkesville Road and on KY 90 west of Burkesville up the Marrowbone Valley. The total package of improvements was a $53 million investment to improve two heavily traveled routes in Cumberland County. "I am committed to building safer roads that lead to new opportunities,"Governor Fletcher said."Today we are breaking ground on a project that will benefit this community for many years to come." The new roadway will have improved shoulders, wider bridges, and improved drainage. The two-pronged design/build project includes reconstruction of a section of KY 61 and critical safety improvements along KY 90. Kentucky's innovative use of a "design/build" process for highway projects allows work to be completed more quickly and efficiently. Contractors work simultaneously on different aspects of the project, including design and construction. "I appreciate Governor Fletcher's commitment to keeping our residents safe," Rep. Jamie Comer (R-Tompkinsville) said. I'm also excited to help celebrate the groundbreaking for the KY 90 and KY 61 improvement projects, which will improve safety and mobility, not only for the people of Cumberland County, but for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who travel those roads en route to Dale Hollow Lake." Friday's announcement included several improvements along KY 90 at various locations between Burkesville and the Metcalfe County line, including:
