Government-funded wellness/fitness center for T-ville Built with combination of grants totaling $4.5 million; description sounds a lot like a YMCA -CM By Larry BrannockGovernor Ernie Fletcher joined Monroe County officials to break ground on the Monroe County Family Health and Wellness Center, in Tompkinsville, a facility which will provide citizens access to fitness activities, health education and health screenings. "Moving Kentucky toward a more prosperous future begins with investments in the health of our citizens," Gov. Fletcher said. "The new wellness center provides Monroe County with a valuable tool for combating obesity and encouraging healthier lifestyles among children and adults in this community." Promotion of wellness, especially increased physical activity, a healthy diet and avoidance of tobacco products , are the cornerstones of Governor Fletcher's statewide health initiative Get Healthy Kentucky. The program is designed to educate and inspire residents of Kentucky to lead a healthy life by using facilities like the Monroe County Family Health and Wellness Center. The 7,000 square-foot wellness center will be adjacent to Monroe County Middle School. It will include cardio and aerobic facilities, an indoor swimming pool, community meeting rooms and staff office space. "The construction of a new wellness center is a high priority to this community," said Senate President David L. Williams (R-Burkesville). "This project demonstrates how local, state and federal officials are effectively working together to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Monroe County." "I'm extremely excited as a resident of Tompkinsville to know we will soon have a multi-purpose wellness facility that will improve the health of our citizens," said Rep. James Comer (R-Tompkinsville). "This area has been underserved for a long time, and this facility will provide all the opportunities for getting fit and living a healthier lifestyle that we could ask for." The wellness center project was recently approved for a $500,000 federal Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant. It also received $3 million in state funding and a $1 million community development block grant. The Governor's Office for Local Development has administered all grants.
