The Story of The Pumpkin Patch at the ACHS Arboretum

When rising fuel costs curtailed student field trips, innovative Adair County teachers found other alternatives to offer students meaningful field work, a walk away from classrooms, right on the Adair County School District campus, with some great added benefits
By Debbie Bradshaw
Three years ago, gas prices began to soar. Classroom teachers had to cut back on field trips due to unreasonably high gas prices.

As classroom teachers themselves, Sheila Willis and I knew the importance for meaningful field trips and decided students and teachers needed other alternatives.

After soliciting help from Columbia's generous community, the Adair PRIDE Arboretum began providing a new place for field trips, right on campus, and The Pumpkin Patch was created. It started out small, only including a few grades and a few activities. But this year they were finally able to include all of CWC students and preschool thru first grade students at ACES.

The Pumpkin Patch schedule runs smoothly due to tireless and dedicated ACHS students.

Student engagement is continuous while at The Pumpkin Patch. Classes walk from the schools reading short info posters or singing harvest songs.

Their first stop is to have a fall photo. Next, in an activities almost every kid loves, they go for face painting and square dancing.

Students enjoy viewing and learning about the old model tractors on loan from the Garrison family and run off some energy and get valuable exercise playing yard games.

Snacks are provided by Adair County Extended Services as students gather around a make-believe camp fire to listen to stories read by ACHS students.

The hay maze is next and is also the student favorite! At the last stop, each student gets to pick a pumpkin to take home.

It is a fun day at The Pumpkin Patch and students never even leave the school grounds!

This project could not be done without the incredible support of the volunteers. The CWC PTO parents and Dana Harmon of Camp Casey are in charge of the Fall Photos.
