Miss Kentucky 1978 recalls lifetime friendships made here Marcia Malone Bell, Kaitlynne Postel's aunt, looking back, is sure God had a hand in the turn of events which brought her niece back to stand on the same Adair County High School stage where she was crowned Miss Lake Cumberland in 1978 "It all began one wonderful spring night in Columbia, Kentucky on a stage in the then Adair County High School Gym. I will be forever grateful. Thank you Columbia!! -MARCIA MALONE BELL, Miss Kentucky, 1978 By Marcia Malone Bell It was such a pleasure to hear about my niece, Miss Kentucky, Kaitlynne Postel's appearances in Adair County and then to read about her on ColumbiaMagazine.com. She enjoyed meeting the students, staff and faculty at all of the schools where she presented on behalf of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's "No Ifs Ands Or Butts" campaign. Kaitlynne told me that while at the Middle School, where she had a fantastic time, that she spoke from the stage where I was crowned Miss Lake Cumberland in 1978. Kaitlynne's mother Lynne Graham Postel was second runner up that year. Lynne and I competed in the Miss Lake Cumberland pageant and have been friends ever since. Who knew we would become family then? I am sure God had his hand in all of this. I'm certainly glad he did!! In 1983 while living and working on an internship in the Washington, DC area, Lynne became Miss Maryland. Sue Stivers comments reminded me of cherished moments Sue Stivers submitted comments to ColumbiaMagazine.com reminded me of so many cherished moments in my life that began in Columbia. In addition to a few years later gaining family from my experience there, I was honored in 1978 to represent the wonderful folks of Columbia in the Miss Kentucky Pageant and blessed to have become Miss Kentucky and then a Top 10 Finalist in the Miss America Pageant. Sue Stivers was my local pageant director. She was my strength and my mentor. I hope she knows just how honored I am to call her friend. Mary Allender and her lovely family, Tommy and Marsha Grider, Lynn Earl Huddleston, Dan Ellis, Doug Beard, Terry Harris, Larry Walker, Bob Stivers, and many others were a part of one of the finest local Miss America Preliminaries in the country. The Gillette Corporation filmed Miss Lake Cumberland pageant The Gillette Corporation filmed the pageant that year, selecting Miss Lake Cumberland above all other local preliminaries in America. They used the film to show other volunteers how a pageant scholarship program should be put together. Because of my participation in the Miss America Scholarship Program, I earned scholarships at the local, state and national levels that afforded me educational opportunities for which there is no substitute. I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky. I did my clinical internship at UK as well. I am currently a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Family Life Educator in a private practice which I own and operate in Lexington. And it all began one wonderful spring night in Columbia, Kentucky on a stage in the then Adair County High School Gym. I will be forever grateful. Thank you Columbia!!
