But more is answers are needed. And, we'd like to have some photographs, if you please. -CM

ColumbiaMagazine.com story

When Gaye Shaw wrote yesterday asking for information about the Spurlock Trio and Acme Recording Studio, Columbia, KY for Mr. Tom Newton who has recently moved from Florida opened a store in Edmonton, KY, she may not have realized the amount of response she'd get.

It appears from the response that Rev. Clifford Spurlock and the Spurlock Trio made quite a favorable impact on Adair County. The minister is remember very warmly by all who new him. The music he and his family provided is still recalled, but less is known about the Acme Recording Studio, but that should come in later today.

So far, starting with a phone call from Trilby Vance, there have been six responses counted. So far, a lot of biographical material is turning up about the Spurlock Trio and Rev. Clifford Spurlock, who was an Evangelical United Brethren in Christ minister, later with the United Methodist Church after the union of the two denominations, in Adair County.

We haven't yet heard anything about the Acme Recording Company, Columbia, KY.

Trilby Vance suggested checking with A.L. Sinclair for the answer. We are still working on that.

Letters have been received by email from, in alphabetical order, Sue Bailey, Frank Dickerson, Juanita McQueary, Nancy Melson, and David A Pyles.

Their letters are printed below:

Sue Bailey wrote:
"Rev. Clifford Spurlock was a pastor at Bear Wallow UMC on KY 206 for several years. He was there in 1941,1942, & 1943. He returned again as pastor at Bear Wallow UMC in 1949. He was pastor there when the present day Church Building was built in 1951. His wife was Lena Ruth Spurlock. I don't know who the Madge Spurlock was. But Pee Wee Sinclair should be able to enlighten you with more information about the Spurlocks, since he lived only a few doors down the road."

Frank Dickerson wrote:
"Rev. Clifford Spurlock was pastor of Barnett's Creek United Methodist Church, back in the forties. He died in Jamestown, KY, in January of 2004. His wife Lena Ruth, died in Jamestown, in April of 2005. Rev. Clifford served a number of surrounding churches and was one of our memorable pastors.

"He was involved in music and could have been affiliated in some way with the Acme outfit. He was always recording activities at the church - probably at all of the churches he served. I also know that he made, or had made, a number of platters" for sale, but am not familiar with any of the titles. I am not familiar with the name Madge Spurlock Barnett, but suspect that she was Rev. Clifford's sister.

"I do know the son of another of our former clergymen, Clifton Hatfield, who is working on a history of his father's ministry and daresay that he would be ecstatic to get his hands on the recording mentioned in your inquiry. I'll ask the son of the father if he wants the get into the discussion.

"I will check with some other sources and see if they remember anything about the Acme establishment. Happy to help if I can."

Juanita McQueary wrote:
"Clifford Spurlock was the pastor at Bearwallow Evangelical United Brethren Church which is now Bearwallow United Methodist Church for approximatly 10 to 15 years in the #50's and #early 60''s. Lenna was Clifford's wife and Madge was his sister. Ralph's parents (Walker and Della McQueary) and grandparents (Pete and Maude McQueary) were members of Bearwallow Church when he was pastor."

Nancy Melson wrote:
"Clifford Spurlock was a minister. He and his wife Lena lived in the Jamestown area until his death about 2 or 3 years ago. They lived in the Union Chapel area of Jamestown, and they went to church next to Union Chapel School. Rev. Spurlock was blind in his last years of life. Someone in that area could tell you more about them."

David A. Pyles wrote:
"Unless I am terribly wrong, Clifford Spurlock was a Methodist minister here in Adair Co years ago."

MR. The Spurlocks: Rev. Clifford, Lena Ruth, son Ernest, ca 1950

2007-10-04 - Photo From Frank Dickerson collection.
Frank Dickerson sent this wonderful old photo of Rev. Clifford Spurlock, his wife Lena Ruth and son Ernest, and writes, "All are deceased. The photo is clearly from an unknown newspaper and I no longer recall who sent it to me. Date of the photo is probably between 1947 and 1949. Ernest was close to my age and we were room mates one year at the Redbird Mission Church Youth Camp, at Beverly, KY, in the eastern mountains of Bell County, KY."
