Lawsuit filed against AC Jail on hehalf of Wellie Paul Grant

WHVE 92.7, the WAVE newsman Larry Smith broadcast the following exclusive news story this morning about a lawsuit filed by Jamestown attorney Robert Bertram in Federal Court i on behalf of Wellie Paul Grant.

"A suit has been filed in Federal Court against the Adair County Jail, William "Bug" Knight, Ann Melton, and the county of Adair.



"Wellie Paul Grant, the alleged murderer of Rex Coffey, filed the suit yesterday, Tuesday, September 25, 2007, in Federal Court, alleging that the jail failed to provide adequate medical attention and prescription medication for Grant.

"The suit alleges that Grant had heart problems, skin problems and dementia, and that adequate care was not provided.

"The suit alleges that the deficiencies at the jail included low staffing levels, lack of basic medical supplies and working equipment, treatment provided by unqualified personnel, and delay in treatment and transfer to outside facilities.

"Grant is seeking damages for among other things, pain and suffering, emotional trauma, and punitive damages.

"The allegations in the complaint provide only one side of the case."
Wellie Paul Grant is charged with the 2006 murder of popular Columbia businessman Rex Coffey, who died on June 11, 2006, at from wounds from a brutal shooting at the picnic grounds at Beech Grove Separate Baptist Church on KY 900 west of Glens Fork, KY, the night before. Rex Coffey obituary

Wellie Paul Grant was captured a short time later and has been incarcerated since, but following psychiatric tests, he was judged unfit for trial.
