KSP reports 15 people died on roadways in past week Kentucky highway fatalities so far down 31 from year ago By Lt. Phil Crumpton, KSP Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story Fifteen people died in 14 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23, 2007, according to Kentucky State Police preliminary statistics. The statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Eleven of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles and five of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of two of the victims is not known at this time. Three of the fatalities were the result of motorcycle crashes. One was not wearing a helmet. One fatality was the result of an ATV crash and was not wearing a helmet. Three of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol. One double fatality crash occurred in Harrison County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Laurel County. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Ballard, Campbell, Carroll, Jefferson, Lawrence, Lee, Marshall, Martin, Nelson, Pulaski and Rockcastle counties. Through September 23, preliminary statistics, indicate that 616 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 31 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 492 motor vehicle fatalities, 285 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 76 motorcycle fatalities, 42 were not wearing helmets. Of the 23 ATV fatalities, 19 were not wearing helmets. Twenty-four pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 145 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555.
