Law class reads U.S. Constitution aloud in Cranmer Hour long event was observance of the anniversary of the final day of 1789 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. With photos By Travis Smith Lindsey Wilson College students in a constitutional law class gave a public reading of the U.S. Constitution on Monday in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center atrium. All educational institutions who receive federal funds were required to publicly observe the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 2007, the final day on which 1789 delegates met at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. At Lindsey Wilson, students from Associate Professor Jane Baxter Jones' "U.S. Constitutional Law" class took turns reading parts of the document as others listened to the hourlong presentation. "The Constitution is really a very short document, taking only approximately 60 minutes to read aloud; yet many citizens never actually read it completely," Jones said. "Selecting this particular project was an attempt to familiarize more people with the Constitution so that they can see that it sets up the basic organization of their government and sets out their fundamental rights and freedoms. It is an attempt to make it more accessible to all people and emphasize the importance of it in contemporary times." Jones said she directed projects to raise awareness of the Constitution before there was a federal requirement to do so. The projects included the distribution of pocket-size copies of the Constitution, readings of the Constitution on campus and other special programs.
