Adair County's diversity will be on display on Saturday, September 22, 2007 when Lindsey Wilson College holds its annual International Student Festival.

This year's festival, called "A World to Experience," will be held in W.W. Slider Humanities Center.Beginning at 10amCT, international students will display ethnic foods and other unique items from their homelands.

Then at 11amCT, several international students will make presentations about their cultures and native countries in Slider Recital Hall.

Lindsey Wilson Director of International Student Programs Suzy McAlpine said the festival is a great way to learn about cultures from all over the world.

"I feel this is very important for international students and Americans," McAlpine said. "The international students can sometimes feel weary; this gives them a chance to feel proud of what they have brought here."

And LWC Coordinator of International Student Campus Activities Dustin Harris said the International Student Festival is a great learning opportunity for the community -- especially area schoolchildren.
"You can read about something in a text book, but when you experience it, it's a lot more memorable," Harris said. "We're trying to make this very memorable. ... It's a great way to showcase the diversity we have; it's one of our many strengths."

This school year, Lindsey Wilson College is home to 94 international students from 35 countries. And one of those students who will make a presentation on September 22 is Koji Hashiyama, a business junior from Tokyo. Hashiyama said the festival is a great way for community members to experience new cultures and also develop a better understanding of the world.

"It's a good chance to get to know each other and learn from one another," Hashiyama said. "You can get a lot of knowledge from the others around you."

Many of the students who will make presentation at the Sept. 22 event are members of the LWC International Student Club. In addition to international students, the club also includes four U.S. students.

"The club helps the students have fun and also educate one another about where they are from," said McAlpine. "Together, they are able to show something that they have, that is strong within themselves."

Harris knows first-hand what it's like to be a student in a foreign land. When he was a Lindsey Wilson student, he spent a semester in London, and he had moments of homesickness. He said that it's little gestures from the community that can make an international student feel at home.

"When I went to England, I got a little homesick and my English friends saw that and said, "We're taking you out to eat,'" Harris said.

Little did Harris know however that his friends were taking him to Kentucky Fried Chicken.

"I asked them, 'Why in the world did you bring me here?' They replied. 'You look like you needed a taste of home,'" Harris said.
