Large group greets new Adair Agent, Nick Roy

New county agent has farm background; grew up working in family's big Holstein operation on Russell County's Gosser Ridge, a highly regarded, progressive farming area

By Ed Waggener

A large crowd--over 60 people-- turned out at the Adair County Extension Center to greet the new Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture, Nick Roy.

The new agent is from Gosser Ridge in Russell County. He grew up on a large farm operation owned by his father and mother, Larry and Reva Roy. During his brief talk, Roy introduced his parents, and said,"I feel blessed to have grown up on a farm. It made me the person I am today."

He has two brothers, Shane, who works with his father on the family farm, and Larry Neal, a field representative for an agricultural firm

Roy said that the farm is still in operation today. The farm has a herd of 120 Holstein cows, and produces row crops of corn and soybeans.

Roy is a 2002 graduate of Russell County High School. There, he said, he was very active in 4-H and it was there, in his senior year that the chose agriculture as a career path.

He attended Somerset Community College and then transferred to Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, where he earned a bachelors degree in Agriculture Education.

At Eastern, he worked on the EKU Meadowbrook farms Livestock and Dairy Operations and served as an Agronomy Lab Assistant. Upon graduation from Eastern in 2006 he received the outstanding Agriculture Student award for academics and leadership.

"I feel very fortunate to have been hired to serve as an Ag Agent for Adair County," he said, and, he said, "after spending my first week on the job, I have found that Adair County has a great staff working this office." He said he found them devoted to their jobs. "They have been tremendous help getting me start this past week."

He said the first week had great challenges and great rewards. "I've answered questions on everything from crops and cattle to identifying ticks and snakes so far," he said. "Each day I have gone home knowing that I have helped someone."

Roy said that he will be attending new agent training in Lexington and that he will working on a Masters degree next year to meet requirements of the Agents career ladder. "And," he said, "as I become further educated it will help me be a better agent."

Roy succeeds a very popular Adair County Agent, David Herbst, who has taken a new multi-county position. All of Herbst's new territory is west of Adair County, but he has chosen to retain his residence in Columbia, KY.

With Roy on board as Agriculture Agent, the Extension Service office is now staffing includes Tony Rose, County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, Kelli Bonifer, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, and Teresa Bright, Extension Secretary.
