About: Honoring Adair County Veterans who have served our country

By Ed Waggener

As Veterans Day, observed November 11, 2007, and the legal holiday, November 12, approaches, every effort will be made to have a much more complete and accurate list than ever before.

Please send special Veterans Day observance events to post on the CM Events calendar as soon as plans are definite. Additions to the Adair County veterans lists are requested, and, because the database is subject to human error, we are asking that readers let us know if any previous entries have been inadvertently omitted or inappropriately changed.

We'd also appreciate stories of wartime experiences to publish between now and veterans day, 2007.

Hardly a day goes by but that we have changes to make ; most days the change is the addition of one or more names.

Chris Bennett has submitted a list of 15 names, 12 in the Bennett family and 3 in the Loy family:
The 12 names in the Bennett family are added as a separate breakout, to preserve the ties and kinship Chris Bennett has researched:

Bennett family list submitted by Chris Bennett (Sept. 8, 2007)
William M Bennett Revolutionary War (died in Adair County, granted land for service in the war): John Bennett war of 1812; Brothers, Robert Bennett, Oliver Bennett, Ben Young Bennett, War with Mexico. All three were born and died in Adair County KY; Youngest Brother, Elisha Bennett, War with Mexico, Civil War Union 13th KY Calvary, Ananias Bennett, James Oliver Bennett, Civil War Union 13th and 1st KY Calvary; Bill Zack Bennett WWII; Kenneth Bennett WWII, Donnie L Bennett Vietnam; David H Bennett Vietnam;

The three names in the Loy family Chris Bennett submitted are being added to the distinguished list of Loys who have rendered military service to the United States of America:

Robert Dellous Loy WWII South Pacific; Wesley Loy WWII Europe; Harris Loy Korea;

This brings to nine the number of Loys listed in the veterans list.

Another letter, unsigned, included the name of James Wisdom, World War II. It has been added.

Stephen Collins sent a letter including the name of one of his grandfathers, "Herbert Franklin, served 20 years including Vietnam, retired at 39, and now lives in Edmonton, KY." He mentioned that his other grandfather served in the Philippines, but did send his name. We'd like to have that name.

Justin Bailey sent the following: Chris Johnson, Army National Guard; Zach Bailey served three years in Iraq;

Debbi Nobles wrote: "Additional info for Bill Nobles: CW3 William N. "Bill" Nobles, US Army Aviation 1974-1988;Several of Bill's uncles have served: Edward Lee Hurst (husband of Frances May Dunbar), US Army WWII; Thomas Oliver Dunbar, US Air Force WWII (career); Lester Charles Schmiege (husband of Barbara Dunbar), Maritime Commission WWII; Gwinn Clinton Dunbar, US Navy WWII; and Robert William Dunbar, US Marine Corps WWII.

"Bill Dunbar was the only one to continue to reside in this areaI included them because they either grew up here or married someone who grew up here. They all returned to the area many times over the years to visit family and friends and especially for Dunbar reunions.

"Eva Frazier Chism of the Bliss community was a nurse during WWII. She is buried in Columbia City Cemetery.Again, thank you for giving us all a chance to honor our veterans and a huge thank you to all the veterans and their families. God bless them all."
