It's a done deal! Wal-Mart buys 20.9 acres at Holladay Place

It's a done deal. And a huge one. A red letter day for Columbia.

Don and Eddie Franklin, Marshall Loy, and Richard L. Walker, owners of Holladay Place, Inc., have sold 20.9 acres of land to Wal-Mart.

The sale was completed today. The local bank for Holladay Place notified the owners at 3:52pm, Thursday, August 30, 2007, that Wal-Mart had wired the payment for the acreage. Richard Walker said that the deed to the property has now been transferred.

But, many local leaders believe that the completion of the sale means a further frenzy in development around the the interchange. A strip center with stores not presently in Columbia is expected and a major new fast food presence is expected.



The land is located near the intersection of KY 80 West and KY 61 South, and the KY 61/Louie B. Nunn Parkway interchange.

Walker said that he would not speculate on when construction would start on the new 154,000 s.f. Super Wal-Mart. He did say that it was his understanding that bids for construction of the project are in, "and I hear the bids are good."

Earlier, Wal-Mart representatives at a Planning & Zoning hearing, said that once construction starts, the facility will take approximately 14 months to finish. That could mean an opening date of approximately October, 2008.

It's a big day for the community, developers believeFor Walker and his group, as well as the community, it's a big day, one that many believe will mark a turning point in the future of Columbia.

Walker said that a lot of hard work has gone into the mammoth project by his group, but added, "The community has been good to help us, too." He singled out Mayor Pat Bell as a major facilitator of the project. "He helped," Walker said.

He said that Mayor Bell had stood up for Columbia's interest, asking for and getting an upscale design for the new store, "But he made sure that decisions were made in a timely fashion.

"I think Wal-Mart was impressed by the competence of Mayor, the Planning & Zoning Commission, and especially with the way the the City of Columbia handled the annexation and utilities issues."

Walker said that people in the neighborhood had been good to work with, and he and his group were thankful for the way they greeted the new development. "The deserve thanks on the annexation," he said.

Work by the Columbia Utilities Commission to complete sewer service to the new center is on schedule, Manager Jim Williams said at the last board meeting of the Columbia Utilities commission.

The present Wal-Mart location is now list for sale at Wal-Mart Realty . The 34,875 s.f. building has recently been update to "For Sale.The old building includes four acres. The building was constructed in 1984.
