Rick Wilson sends update on Helmets for Kids program

Chairperson comments on Helmets for Kids current resources, the Hamburger Helper grant application, which has drawn 17 comments today from Adair Countians; and says that HFK is not soliciting more local funds at this point

By Rick Wilson, Chairperson, Adair County Helmets for kids

We are not running out of funds yet. We have enough for 173 helmets. I have received 149 requests at this point. As soon as I receive an application in the mail, I immediately send a coupon back to them.

I have sent out 109 coupons for free helmets. I estimated that about 75-80 have actually picked up their helment. The grant will ensure we will have funds for the program to be ongoing.

A note, too, on the Hamburger Helper Grant. You must be 18 to make comments on the Hamburger Helper grant. We do ask that as many local people who qualify to comment do so.

(Today, Wednesday, August 29, comments on the Hamburger Helper site have almost doubled, going from 21 to 38. The comments are from a wide cross section of Adair County leaders and concerned citizens. To read the comments, and to comment yourself, Click Here -CM)
I especially liked the comment in the article earlier today on ColumbiaMagazine.com that all of the money stays in Adair County and 100% goes toward purchasing the helmets.I'm not really asking for additional local funds because we are meeting the need at this time. I hope the grant comes through to help ensure that the program continues. I have been very humbled by the terrific response from all of the comments.

But if anyone should like to know how far donations go, each help costs us $20. That's a lot of safety for a very small outlay of money.

Thanks for all your help. I think the web site, ColumbiaMagazine.com, has been a big factor in helping get the word out about the program.
