Nothing but smiles at Prime Time Reading program at ACPL

By Ellen Zornes

How do you hold the attention of 74 active children and their parents? Why its easyjust get a storytelleror two!

And that is just what Lee Ann Jessee, Adair County Public Library Director, and Aleina Milligan, Prime Time for Family Reading, Coordinator, did. They enlisted two veteran storytellers associated with Lindsey Wilson Colleges Division of Education; Dr. Melissa Gibson, Associate Professor of Education and Rhonda Godby, adjunct instructor, reading specialist and first grade teacher at Union Chapel Elementary School. Preschool activities took place in the childrens room and were led by preschool coordinator, Anita Riddle.

Prime Time Family Reading began August 14th at the Adair County Public Library with a crowd of 74. Participation required advance registration of a child along with a parent or guardian.

Participants were fed a wonderful meal provided by Community Medical Services and L.E.A.D. Adair County. After the meal, families gathered for storytelling with Rhonda Godby and Dr. Melissa Gibson. Group discussion followed the storytelling. Prime Time Family Reading, a six week literacy program, introduces families to the pleasures and benefits of reading together and also showcases the many resources and services available at the library.

The program at the Adair County Public Library is sponsored by the Kentucky Humanities Council and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.

Prime Time Family Reading programs was developed by the LEH (Louisianna Endowment for the Arts), the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. The LEH is a private, statewide, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The library thanked Kaye Bowman, Debbie Cowan, Leslie Cowan, Dana Harmon, Dana Harvey, Hannah Logdson, Paula Garrison, Mary Kate White and Ellen Zornes for assisting and Anita Riddle for being a great preschool coordinator!!
