L.T. Grider sheds light on Flowers & Patteson token

About: Information wanted on Flowers and Patteson coin

By L.T. Grider
Late of greater metropolitan Esto, Russell County, currently of war-torn Greenwood, Ind.

The Flowers & Patteson piece is a merchant's token.

Such tokens were common in the 19th and early 20th century, sometimes used in lieu of small change and sometimes handed out to customers as prizes, gifts, premiums or advertizing.

The value (then) was exactly as stated on the token -- five cents in store trade at Flowers & Patteson.

To an avid collector of things Adair Countian, the token's value (today) might be worth upwards of ten dollars or so. It would be of somewhat less value to the general collector of exonumia.

Flowers & Patteson was a grocery/general store that operated briefly in Columbia prior to 1920. It went out of business about August, 1918, when Mr. Flowers answered the call to the colors and Mr. Patteson decided to pursue other business interests.

At that time, telephone service in Adair County was provided by the Columbia Telephone Company, Inc. The operator at the time Flowers & Patteson was in business was Mr. Todd Young, and all the phone numbers were three digits.
Thank you, Mr. Grider, for that delightful essay. Don't know when we've gotten more information, so beautifully written, in so concise a report. -ED, whose family phone number was 192, party-line ring 192A, at the wall phone in the hallway entrance at E.P. & Audrey Waggener residence, 705 Jamestown Street, Columbia, Kentucky, in the 1940s.
