About: Scrollwork in basket are french curves

Ed,

That's Hudson, William Henry HUDSON, not Judson.

The mark of the beast according to the NIV Bible footnotes and other commentaries I've read referred to imperial Rome.

It is in Revelations and the writer, John, is trying to tell the Christians that they should not worship the emperor although that was the order given and people could be executed for not worshipping the emperor.

John tried to get the message across without the Roman authorities knowing what he was talking about. The beast was Roman rulers.

The number 7 was a number of Jewish significance, even a sort of perfection - and considered lucky today for some people. The Jewish people at that time thought heaven had 7 levels (our expression of being in 7th heaven, comes from that thought.) Revelations has many, many references to the number 7.

So 666 was like trying, but not being able to reach the 7. I guess it was sort of a put down of the Romans - but they were in power, so there had to be a way of saying it w/o the Romans knowing what was said about them.

s/A faithful reader
