Some more lessons from childhood

re: A lesson in parenting, stewardship, and fighting litter
To the editor, CM

As a child my mother taught me the same lesson.I made the mistake of throwing a banana peel out on Burkesville St. She immediately stopped the car and I had to get out and walk back to pick it up.

I believe that every citizen of Columbia saw me that day. If they didn't they missed their only chance.

I didn't litter again. I learned not to take things that didn't belong to me one day walking home from school down grade school hill. There were samples of laundry detergent hanging on door knobs and I thought how proud my mom would be to have a box.

When I got home she immediately took me back and I had to get out and hang it back on the door.
I had assured her that no one lived in the house but as luck would have it when we got there clean laundry was hanging on the line out back.

These are lessons that I will never forget.
