KY Flame finishes season with 17-1 loss: Still a great season!

KENTUCKY AC FLAME: ADAIR COUNTY COULDN'T BE PROUDER OF YOU!

Kentucky was 2-2 in Regional play; loss was only second in 9 games>

By Gerald Reliford

The Kentucky AC Flame's run is ended, but the accomplishment still ranks the best in Adair County Little League history. No other team has gone this far. AC Flames finished one game short of reaching the Regional semi-finals when a strong Ohio team handed them only their second loss in nine games.

The first inning was scoreless as Meredith Corbin set down the first three Ohio batters. AC had one hit in the bottom of the inning when MacKenzie Martin singled.

The second inning saw the collapse of Adair pitching that had been awesome for eight consecutive games. Corbin hit the first batter. There followed a string of ten hits with a walk and an error mixed in as Ohio sent 15 batters to the plate.

They scored 11 runs before they were finished. The Flame scored their lone run when Breonia Thurman doubled, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out by Darriann Smith. AC sent no more than four batters to the plate in any inning.

Ohio added four more runs in the third off relief pitcher Chelsea Sampson on three walks, an error at second, and a single. The Flame went down in order. Ohio put up two more runs in the fourth on two walks, 2 errors, and a single. In the fourth and fifth innings Kentucky sent only three batters to the plate.

The one bright spot was when Heather Powell came in to pitch the fifth inning and retired the side with the aid of a double play following a walk.

The AC Flames can still be proud of their performance in Akron. They were the best team not to make it out of pool play. Out of the ten state teams they finished fifth. Only the four teams making it to the finals were better. They finished with a 2-2 record.

This group of girls has the potential to return next year. They can return home with their heads up. They are a fine group of young softball players.
