Malfunction said to be cause of serious KY 61 injury accident

One driver taken to airlifted to UK Medical Center after treatment at Westlake; one passenger taken to Westlake and flown directly from the helipad there to UL Hospital in Louisville, KY, another being transported to UK Medical Center by ambulance from Westlake

A vehicle malfunction was given as the reason for a head-on collision on KY 61 just before noon today which resulted in serious injuries, with one of the injured being flown to the University of Louisville.

The accident occurred immediately in front of Garrison Construction Company at Clay Ridge, 7 miles north of Columbia. Traffic was stopped on the road for approximately 45 minutes, as KSP, and EMS Units from Adair and Green Counties were on the scene. The accident occurred just before noon today, Monday, August 5, 2007, at 11:40.

The accident occurred, according to the KSP report, when Hudson, was northbound operating a 1998 Ford Ranger which experienced a vehicle malfunction and crossed into the southbound land striking a 1989 Dodge Dakota operated by Mark Fudge head-on. The impact was passenger side to passenger side.

Immediately after the impact, eyewitnesses said that the Dodge Dakota came to rest blocking both lanes of KY 61. The Ford Ranger came to rest in the yard of the old home of Lewis and Gail Garrison, on the west side of KY 61.

Passenger Eli Yoder, 24, Columbia, KY, who was in the right seat, was flown to the University of Louisville Hospital directly from the helipad at Westlake Regional Hospital after being transported there by EMS. The Adair County EMS and the Adair County Fire Department provided extrication services. Green County EMS was at the scene for mutual aid, and to provide transportation to Westlake Regional Hospital.

Eli Yoder was a passenger in a 1989 Dodge operated by Mark A. Fudge (not the Mark Fudge who is Adair County basketball coach), 46, Columbia, KY. Eli Yoder was the only one of the four occupants in the crash who was not belted.

Fudge, 35, was belted and was taken to Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia, KY and later transported to UK Medical Center in Lexington by ambulance.. Another passenger in the Fudge vehicle, Edward Yoder, 31, Columbia, KY who was belted, was also treated and released at Westlake.

Hudson was not injured.

The Ford Ranger driven by Charles Hudson was removed by Lynn's Service Center, Columbia, KY. The 1989 Dodge Dakota was removed from the scene by Ronnie Stone, Columbia, KY.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Jamie Richard of Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY and a second KSP officer.
