Gov. Fletcher orders safety measures for Kentucky bridges

Thirty eight bridges have issues. Most in Jefferson. None in Adair or surrounding counties.

Special ColumbiaMagazine edit of Commonwealth News Center basic information

Following Governor Ernie Fletcher's directive, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is taking immediate steps to ensure the safety and structural integrity of Kentucky bridges. The Governor issued the mandate to the KYTC following the tragic bridge collapse in Minneapolis on Wednesday, August 1, 2007.

Thirty-eight bridges in the commonwealth are listed as having issues. Eleven of these are in Jefferson County, four are in Franklin. None are in Adair or surrounding counties. The closest bridge with issues in Boyle County over Lake Herrington (Dix River) at the Garrard Boyle County Line. It is on KY 3042.

Thorough reviews and additional safety inspections of the state's aging bridges are key elements of the cabinet's commitment to meet and exceed bridge safety standards.

"I am announcing today that I have directed the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to take all steps necessary to ensure that our bridges are safe," said Governor Fletcher.

"Governor Fletcher has directed us to take the additional steps we feel are necessary to ensure safety, and that's what we will do," said KYTC Secretary Bill Nighbert. "These proactive measures are designed to give us further assurance of the safety of bridges across the state."

The cabinet will analyze and review the most recent inspection reports for all of Kentucky's long-span bridges that are over 500 feet long and are rated as structurally deficient. The same bridges also will get an additional, unscheduled inspection.

KYTC staff has begun reviewing inspection reports. Inspection dates for the bridges are being scheduled.

KYTC officials also will conduct an analysis of construction projects currently being performed on bridges. This review will maximize safety for the driving public and construction crews.

"Our first priority is public safety," said Commissioner Marc D. Williams, of the KYTC's Department of Highways. "Our inspection methods and standards are already beyond the general requirements. However, at the direction of the Governor, we are proactively increasing the rigor with which we approach these issues. We want to reassure the public that they are safe on Kentucky bridges."
