Lindsey Wilson College mourns death of Carrie Thornton

"She was an amazing woman . . . she will be greatly missed" - KIMBERLY PINSON-BUECHEL
By Emily Harlan, LWC staff writer

Lindsey Wilson College Communication Instructor Carrie Thornton died Friday night in Glasgow, KY, following a long battle with cancer.

She was 52.

Thornton had been a full-time member of the LWC faculty since the 1999-2000 school year.

"I can't help but remember her beautiful smile, gracious demeanor and caring personality," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "She touched so many students through her encouraging words and can-do attitude. We will all miss her terribly."

Thornton was an adviser to the LWC Black Student Union, and she was a member of the faculty social committee and student publication committee.

Her former students recalled Thornton's loving attitude as one of the characteristics that distinguished her.

"On the day of my (communication) exit exam she said to me, 'All females are women, but only a few can be ladies, and you are a true lady,'" said Kimberly Pinson-Buechel, a 2005 LWC graduate who had Thornton for several classes. "The night before graduation she handed me a little box, inside was a ladybug pin. She knew that I collected ladybugs as a reminder of my biological mother that passed with cancer when I was 6 years old. The day of graduation, as I walked through the facility receiving line, there she stood with a big smile and the same ladybug pin on her gown. Mrs. Thornton was an amazing woman and she will be greatly missed."

Thornton earned a bachelor's and master's degree in communication from Western Kentucky University. Her areas of interest were communication protocol, public speaking, listening, group communication and decision-making.

Visitation is scheduled from 6-9pm CT on Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Glasgow, Ky., 611 S Lewis St. The funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT on Wednesday at the church. For more information, contact the church at (270) 651-2339.
