More on West Big Creek School, 1948-1949 It was across the road from the Old Green Place on Road Eighty, near Joanna's Store To Ed, ColumbiaMagazine.com Cathy said you wanted to know where Big Creek School was. There is a building still there, that has a church in it. But I can't believe it is the same building. You go through Gradyville from Columbia on Road Eighty. It's just before you get to a place that says "Joanna's Store." I think there are some trailers there, also. This is all on the right side of the road. The building that is a church sets in the same spot were the school was is on the right side of the road up on a hill. I went to school there from the second to the seventh grade. Then I went to Gradyville the eighth grade before starting high school. The Comptons are my first cousins. s/Shirley Jones Thanks, Shirley Jones. The description sounds like the north side of the road going up what CM calls "Kudzu Mountain," but there has to be a better, proper name for it. The homes lot you describe would be "Windmill Mobile Homes," operated by the Bennetts. And Joanna's Store was recently a restaurant. The name of the church where the Big Creek School stood is "Jesus Name Church," I believe. The location is approximately opposite the beautiful Old Green Place. We'd love to have a photo of the school building to post, if anyone has a copy, or any stories about the community the picture may have sparked, including the one it brought to the editor's mind, about Jimmy Firquin's prowess at hunting wampus cats in the area. In the meantime, here's the link to the photo: "Keepsake photo: West Big Creek School, 1948-1949" -CM This story was posted on 2007-07-30 04:30:15
