LCDHD, CFRT, Rexs join to offer free helmets for ATV riders Adair County Child Fatality Review Team chairperson says that there have been no ATV related fatalities since he has been coroner, but high number of injuries. Rick Wilson, Adair County Coroner and Chairperson of the Adair County Child Fatality Review Team (AC CFRT) has announced that the gorup is giving away free ATV helmets to children under 18, while supplies last. "I just got the go-ahead this afternoon," Mr. Wilson said. "It is so important I wanted to get the word out as soon as possible."The Adair County CFRT will be aided in the effort by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department and Rex's Cycle Shop. "We review deaths of children who die in Adair County," Wilson said of the AC CFRT, "and try to identify trends and develop strategies to prevent deaths. Since I began serving as coroner," he continued, "we have not had a death associated with an ATV, but Adair County has had a multitude of severe injuries as a result of ATV and motorcycle wrecks." Wilson believes that taking a pro-active approach in preventing death is a worthy cause. "So our Adair County Child Fatality Team has developed a program which promotes awareness of the dangers of ATVs and teaches how to enjoy them safely. "We have determined that one of the best things anyone can do to prevent death and major injury is to wear a helmet. "Many children do not have a helmet or do not have a properly fitted helmet. "The Lake Cumberland District Health Department has funds that are appropriated to CFTs and we have been approved to purchase helmets for Adair County children and simply give them a helmet with their agreement that they will wear it when using their ATV or motorcycle." "Tammy Coffey with Rex's Cycle Shop is also concerned about safety and has agreed to provide the helmets at no cost to our Child Fatality Team," Rick Wilson said."We hope this effort will reduce injuries and prevent deaths," he said.To get a free helmet for a child under 18, while supplies last, just contact Rick Wilson at (270) 378-1490, for an application. He added, "Remember, ride safe and ride smart. Wear a helmet." This story was posted on 2007-07-27 16:36:44
