Slinker-Burton Huge Cookout at the Nars: Look-alikes

2007-07-23 - Frankie Burton Park, Tower Road of KY 206 - Photo By Deborah Hensley.
It looks like Burton Ridge Mayor Frankie Burton on the left. It is, he and wife Sheila and neighbor Steve and Bernadine (Hardwick) Slinker had the dangest cookout Sunday, July 22, 2007, seen in a long time on the ridge. Many famous people were there, including, on the right, above, Vice President Dick Cheney, or so everybody thought. It's really Kenny Sypherd of Tavares, Florida, who says no one ever mentioned the similarity until he got to Columbia, where, at the Columbia Best Western, he was asked several times if he were the Vice President.

2007-07-23 - Frankie Burton Park, Tower Road of KY 206 - Photo By Ed Waggener.
There was plenty of entertainment, some straight from Nashville, at the Slinker-Burton Huge Cookout. Above, Rita Jane Burton, the Mayor's sister-in-law, made the hills come alive with the sound of music. The out door pavillion was a perfect venue for her. Clockwise, upper left, are (some waiting to sing) Carol Cowan, Dolly Burton (Frankie's Aunt), Karen Burton, Roger Burton, Murrell Burton, Laymon Norris, Paula Fulp. Behind Rita Jane is Jean Burton. The music stand/buffet line on ordinary days is the location of Mayor Burton's back office, and is fitted with a hammock.

Slinker-Burton Huge Cookout: Man, wife of the day

2007-07-23 - Frankie Burton Park, Tower Road of KY 206 - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The man who is still drawing praise today is Tony Burton and his inspiration, wife Rhonda. Tony Burton cooked the 180 lb. hog which fed the multitude at the Slinker-Burton Huge Cookout on Sunday, July 22, 2007. "It's the first and last hog I'll ever cook," Burton said. "I got up at 4:00am to put it on, and we started serving at 11:00am." The hog was smoked to perfection on a machine which is now a permanent fixture at the park, a smoker bought from Doug Campbell. Guests at the S-BHC pronounced the hog excellent.

2007-07-23 - Frankie Burton Park, Tower Road of KY 206 - Photo By Ed Waggener.
An honored guest at the SBHC 2007 was Dr. Phil Aaron, Medical Director of Dr. Phil Aaron Medical Center in Columbia. Dr. Aaron laid a hand on the forehead of the host, Mayor Frankie, to do an emergency diagnosis. "Burtonitis," he said. "There's no known cure. Nor any need for one. He'll just have live with it." In the background, in the yellow outfit, is host Bernadine Hardwick Slinker, with her friend from Florida, Nellie Sypherd. Over to the right, walking out of the picture, is Gene Dale Holmes, treading ancestral lands. His family once owned the land on which Frankie Burton Park was established.
