Kelli Bonifer: Preventing osteoporosis By Kelli Bonifer, Adair County Home Extension Agent Osteoporosis causes bones to be fragile and increases the risk of fractures to the hip, spine and wrist. It is a silent disease meaning you may not show any signs or symptoms until you have a fracture. The disease affects 128,000 Kentucky women and 37,300 Kentucky men. Taking the time to know the risk factors and having an early prevention program can help you decrease your chances of getting the disease as you get older. To prevent the disease, you need to build strong bones. Building strong bones begins early and continues throughout your lifetime. There are five main steps to prevention.
Dont wait until its too late. Talk to your doctor and begin your own osteoporosis prevention plan today. For more information on heath and wellness issues, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service. Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability or national origin.
