Redemption in Paintsville The town held bad memories Kaylin and Meredith, where, as 10-year-olds, they played on an Adair County Little League team which was humbled in State Tourney action, winning only one game there. By a forfeit. It was a painful experience, enough to shake the confidence of some. But not these two. By Gerald Reliford In 2004 Kaylin Hughes and Meredith Corbin were team members on the first Adair County Little League Softball team to reach the State Tournament. They were 10 years old and the tournament was held at Paintsville. Due to a lack of experience and knowledge the Adair team was destroyed, winning only one game by a forfeit. They never really had a chance in most of the games. The team decided then and there that they were better than that. In 2005 Corbin and Hughes led the team to the 11 year old state championship. This was the first state title for an Adair little league team. In 2006 they played in the state tournament on the 11-12 year olds but lost. Its 2007 and again Kaylin and Meredith are headed to the state tournament as members of the AC Flame to compete in the Junior League Softball Division for 13-14 year olds. It is a return to Paintsville for the girls, which holds some bad memories for them. This is where their state tournament history began. Would this time be better than before? Determined to do better than before the girls spearheaded the Ac Flame with pitching and hitting. Meredith pitched the best series of her life and Kaylin led the team in runs batted in with 2 homeruns, 4 doubles, and a triple. With the help of eight excellent team mates they became the Kentucky Junior League state champs. They also became the only two players in Adair sports history to win two state titles, especially by age 13. Success hasnt affected the girls attitude. They dont boast or act like they are better than you. When asked how they felt after the big win, Meredith only shrugged her shoulders and Kaylins only word was relieved. They now go on to Akron, Ohio, to see what the future holds for them. With hard work on their part, their softball futures could be very bright. Even though this story is about them, both girls realize their success was made possible by their team mates. When asked who she would pick as the mvp for the tournament Hughes said, We wouldnt do that. It was a team effort. It wasnt one player, we did it as a team. They will now go to Akron as a team.
