Adair-Clinton Flames headed to the Regional in Akron, OH!

Flames win the Kentucky Junior League State Championship going 5-0 in games, blistering 89-10 total score, to set new standard for Adair County softball!
Tournament Summary: The AC Flame out scored the opposition 89 to 10 in the five game series. The AC pitching staff averaged nearly 10 strike outs per game during the tournament and walked only eight batters in the entire tournament (four of those in the first game). It is now on to Akron, Ohio to face Illinois, Ohio, and Iowa in pool play with the two best records going on to the championship series. Coach Mendal Sexton says, We dont know how good these girls are. They have unknown potential. We will just have to wait and see. It has happened again.

Within three years three Adair softball teams have won state championships.



One of the teams is the AC Flame made up of girls from Adair and Clinton County. They were a perfect 5-0 for the tournament outscoring their opponents 89 to 10. It was an awesome display of power and pitching as the Flame dominated the opposition. The tournament favorite was a powerful Fleming-Neon team that was 15-0 for this season going into the tournament. They were the first opponent for the Flame.

AC Flame 12, Fleming-Neon 4

The AC Flame got off to a rocky start but rebounded to beat Fleming-Neon 12-4 in the opening game of the Little League Softball State Tournament for ages 13-14 in Paintsville, Ky.

The AC team went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first on 3 consecutive strikeouts by the Fleming-Neon pitcher.

Fleming-Neon scored 2 of their 4 runs in the bottom of the first when AC pitcher Meredith Corbin walked 2, hit 2 batters, and gave up a single. It looked like AC might be on the ropes.

In the top of the second inning the Fleming-Neon pitcher again struck out the side but a lead off error allowed Brooke Boils to make it around to score.

Corbin settled down after first inning jitters and retired the three batters she faced in inning two.

In the third inning the AC bats came alive when Kayla Walls, Mackenzie Martin, and Kaylin Hughes all singled. All three had struck out in the first two innings. Martins single scored two runners and Hughes single scored one. Hughes later scored on a passed ball by the catcher. Chelsea Brown had led off the inning with a walk and was one of the runs that scored on Martins hit.

Corbin struck out the side in the bottom of the third. After a single by Fleming-Neon, an AC error allowed a run to score. After 3 innings it was AC leading 5-3.

Neither team put a runner on base in the fourth inning. The AC Flame ignited again in the 5th when Walls walked, Boils singled, Hughes was hit by a pitch and Chelsea Sampson singled after walks by Breonia Thurman and Heather Powell. This all led to 4 more AC scores.

Again in the top of the sixth the AC bats were alive as they scored three more runs when Corbin doubled, Martin singled, and Boils reached base and scored on an error.

In the bottom of the sixth Fleming-Neon sent seven batters to the plate but only scored one run and died with the bases loaded.

MacKenzie Martin led AC with two hits and the three runs batted in. Brooke Boils scored three runs

Flame burns Belfry 33-0

On Sunday the Flame burned brightly as the team collected 35 hits and scored 33 runs against and overmatched Belfry team that showed heart even in a one sided defeat. Every player on the AC team hit safely Chelsea Sampson was 6 for 6 scoring 5 runs. MacKenzie Martin and Brooke Boils were five for five with Martin scoring 4 times and Boils five. Kaylin Hughes had 4 hits including a two run shot over the leftfield fence. She hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple, and homerun. She led the team with 3 rbis. Every player scored at least one run and had at least one rbi except Chelsea Brown who was perfect at the plate reaching base on every appearance.

The AC defense and pitching was great. Heather Powell and Chelsea Sampson combined for an 8 hit shutout with four strikeouts and one walk. Kaylin Hughes led a blistering attack with four hit, four runs, one of the hits being a two run homer, and three runs batted in. Martin, Boils, and Sampson had five hits and scored five runs each.

AC Flame 22, Winchester 3

The Flame wasted no time getting into the scoring column when Kayla Walls walked, MacKenzie Martin walked, and Brooke Boils tripled driving them home. Boils then scored on a Winchester fielding error. Breonia Thurman reach base on an error went to third on the play and scored on a passed ball. AC scored 4 in their half of the inning.

Meredith Corbin set the Winchester team down 1-2-3 on a groundout to second and two strikeouts.

Both teams went down in order in the second inning.

In the third inning AC sent eleven batters to the plate and brought six of them home. Martin led off the inning with a double. Boils followed with a double scoring Martin. Kaylin Hughes unleashed a triple scoring Boils and then scored on a passed ball. Thurman walked stole third and scored on an infield single by Chelsea Sampson. Chelsea Brown followed with a triple and scored on a Walls groundout. AC plated 6 runs on four hits.

In the bottom of the inning Corbin put Winchester down striking out the side.

Twelve AC batters visited the plate in the fourth inning with 8 of them reaching home. Hughes led off the inning with a double. Thurman then doubled to score Hughes. She was followed by Heather Powell who singled in Thurman. Sampson got aboard on a fielders choice, Brown walked and Walls doubled to drive them in. Dariann Smith singled, Martin singled, Boils singled, and Hughes followed with her second double of the inning. She went to third on the throw and scored on a groundout by Thurman.

Winchester got their three runs in the bottom of the fourth on an AC error followed by a double, a single, a double, another single. Four hits and three runs.

In the top of the fifth AC scored three more times as Brown walked, Smith walked, Martin singled to drive them in, and Boils singled to score Martin.Winchester did not score in the bottom of the fifth when Breonia Thurman had three unassisted putout at first base. The game was called on the 15 run rule.

Brooke Boils led the hitting attack going 4 for 5, scoring 3 runs and getting 5 rbis. Hughes followed with 3 for 5 hitting scored three runs and had three rbis. Meredith Corbin and Heather Powell allowed 4 hits and three runs while walking only one and striking out nine.

AC Flame 10, Fleming Co. 0

Meredith Corbin started the fourth game with guns blazing as she struck out the side in the top of the first.

AC sent only four batter to the plate and failed to score with only a single by Corbin.

In the second one Fleming County batter reached on an error. Corbin struck out the other three batters she faced.

AC had only one hit in the inning but it was productive as Thurman singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Fleming County again went down in order in the third.

In the bottom half of the third Martin doubled, went to third on the throw in and scored on a single by Boils.

In the top of the fourth Corbin set Fleming County down in order.

AC scored three times in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Thurman, a walk to Smith, a double by Powell, a single by Sampson, and a single by Martin.

Fleming County did no damage in the fifth sending only four batters to the plate. Corbin struck out two of them and another popped out to first.

AC scored 4 times in their half of the fifth when Thurman doubled, Smith singled, and Powell tripled and scored on an error.

Fleming County was scoreless in the 6th, sending only four batters to the plate.

AC ended the game on the ten run rule in the bottom of the 6th. Leading 8 to 0, Corbin walked, Martin singled, both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Boils singled to drive them in and end the game. Heather Powell led the AC hitters going two for two with a walk, scoring twice, and batting in three runs. Breonia Thurman was three for three and scored three runs.



In the Championship game AC flame faced the Fleming-Neon team they had beaten in the opener. Going into the game AC was 4-0 and Fleming-Neon was 3-1. AC again handed Fleming-Neon only their second defeat of the season.

AC led off the game when Kayla Walls walked, Martin tripled driving in Walls and Hughes drove in Martin on a third to first out.

In the bottom of the first Fleming-Neon led off with a bunt single. The runner then stole second and third. Meredith Corbin, who pitched outstandingly during the entire tournament, then struck out the next three batters leaving the runner stranded at third.

In the AC second Smith, Sampson, and Walls all walked but failed to score.

Fleming-Neon went down in order in their half of the inning.

The third inning was quiet as Ac went down 1-2-3. Corbin struck out three Fleming-Neon batters while allowing only a single.

AC scored twice in the top of the fourth when Sampson singled went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on another passed ball. Walls then walked, Corbin walked and Martin singled.

Fleming-Neon scored twice in the inning on an AC error and back to back singles. At the end of four it was AC-4 Fleming-Neon-2.

AC broke open the game in the fifth when Hughes singled, Thurman was hit by a pitch, Brown walked, Corbin walked, and Martin doubled. This led to four AC runs.

Fleming-Neon again failed to score as they sent only three batters to the plate. One batter reached base on an error but was tagged out by Chelsea Brown on a great play at the plate.

AC did nothing in their half of the 6th. Fleming-Neon scored one run on three hits in the bottom of the inning.

Leading 8 to 3 going into the 7th, the Flame slammed the door when Walls singled, Corbin doubled, Martin Walked, Boils reached base on a fielders choice, Kaylin Hughes hit her second homerun of the tournament, a three run blast well over the leftfield fence.

In the bottom of the seventh Corbin struck out the first two batters, the next reached on an error, and next ended the game on a ground ball back to the pitcher. Corbin struck out 11 batters and walked none in the Championship game. Kaylin Hughes led the hitting attack with three hits and four rbis, followed by MacKenzie Martin with three hits and three rbis.
