COLUMBIA, Ky. Columbia-Adair County Airport (CACA) Board members met Tuesday, July 17, and discussed the method in which they will put the new six-plane hangar project up for bid within the next two weeks. CACA Board members Buddy Sewell, John Ford, Howard Loy, Chairman John Rarey and Airport manager Doug Campbell were present at Monday's meeting, welcoming new member, Howard Loy, to the Airport Board.

"I would like to get in the position to bid this out and see the hangar built before winter," Chairman Rarey said.

Bids for the new hangar project will be divided into four areas excavation, materials, erection and paving. CACA Board members say they will working this week on the wording of the bids and technicalities of the construction specifications in order to advertise in the area's largest newspaper by the end of next week.

"Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to bid on any, or all, of the areas for bid," Ford said.

Currently, the Airport's only hangar houses eight planes, and was built to comfortably accommodate four. Because of this reason, pilots must often have to move by hand other airplanes that block them from getting out of the doors before they can pull their planes in and out of the hangar.

CACA Board members say several people have inquired about the proposed 128' x 65' x 14' hangar, and members expect the much needed spaces to rent very quickly, as well as eventually pay for the cost of the project.

"It'll be full in a heartbeat," Ford said.

To assure fairness in space availability, CACA Board members elected to accept requests: first from people who have aircraft already based in Adair County that is currently kept outside; secondly from people who have aircraft already based in Adair County that is currently housed inside; and thirdly from newcomers.

Funding for the project will be directly provided by the Columbia-Adair County Airport.

Bid acceptance will be advertised locally for two weeks, with an additional two weeks allotted for proposals to be turned in for review.

* From July 6 to July 17, the CACA Board reported $600+ in fuel sales.

Taking off from 2nd smallest Kentucky runway

2007-07-18 - Columbia-Adair County Airport - Photo By Sean Hitchcock. The largest airplane that can land on the second smallest runway in Kentucky: Dr. John Korba stands beside his Cessna twin-engine 340 before taking off to his home in Bowling Green, KY, at the end of a days work, Tuesday, July 17. Dr. Korba visits Adair County, often daily, to perform medical procedures and to see and treat local patients in Columbia. It takes a lot of braking power and nearly every foot of the 2800 feet runway at the C-A Airport for the takeoff and landing of his airplane. Airport officials say a 4000 feet runway is necessary to accommodate larger, corporate airplanes; and that the 2800 feet runway will prove to be a tremendous disadvantage in the growth opportunities in Adair County from larger corporations and industries looking to locate in the region.
