The Adair County Republican Executive Committee, named Danny Goodin as the nominee for the unexpired term of First District Magistrate, a position left vacant by the resignation of 13 1/2 year Fiscal Court veteran Roger Stephens.

The party will forward official papers of the proceedings which started last night at 6:00pm in the Basement of the Adair Annex Building, with all our of the Executive Committee present. A closed meeting, with just the Executive Committee members present, followed the less than 20 minute session.

According to Vice Chair Lisa Lee, the committee voted unanimously to name Goodin as the nominee. She said that the party will encourage him to file within the next day or two. "There is a lot of campaigning to do," she said.

Benton Fudge presided as chairman, also present were vice chair Lisa Lee, Secretary Treasurer Tim Bradshaw, and Adair County Youth Chairman Jason Cross.

Before the nominations, Lisa Lee, Administrative Assistant in the Office of Adair County CJE Ann Melton, told the candidates for the nomination that the job of Magistrate is tough, and especially in the First District. "You've got a large district," she said. "one with a lot of work to be done. You'll have people calling you with problems, and not just from the First District, but from all over the county. The pay is small, considering all the work you'll have to do, so I know you won't be wanting the job just for the salary."

And she told them there would be a need to make tough decisions. "And remember," the Judge's office can't act without the court's approval. This is an important job."

Six individuals were nominated. Goodin was nominated by Ralph Gilbert Curry; Charles Shepherd by nominated by his daughter in law, Brandy Shepherd; the others, including First District Constable Harold Burton, Darrell Absher, Donnie Curry, and Steve Moore.

During the meeting, each candidate pledged to support the Republican Party and was asked why they wanted the position and what their goals were if they were to ultimately be elected to the post.

Steve Moore, a White Oak resident, said, "If have a small business and I feel I have a stake in the future of Adair County, especially because I have three children.

Danny Goodin,, who lives midway between Purdy and Ella on KY 206, said that his main concern would be the county road system. "I'll work to improve our roads," he said, and "I'll work with the people of the district to help in any way I can."

Donnie Curry,, who lives in the Little Cake Precinct, said, "I want to help people in the the whole county. I'll do everything I can to make things better."

Darrell Absher, said that being a magistrate is something he'd been thinking of doing for a long time. "When my children were growing up, I used to encourage them to leave Adair County because there was nothing here for them to earn a living. I hope to change things, so I can encourage my grandchildren to live here."

First District Constable Harold Burton, said that he felt he knows the district best and that he could spend more time at the job. "I'm retired now," he said, "and I'd like to work to improve the district and to get industry here," and, he added, "I'll work for the entire District, not just my own precinct."

Charles Shepherd was not present, but his daughter-in-law said of Mr. Shepherd, "He'll make a wonderful magistrate. He has a huge heart," and added, "I know he'll support the Republican Party."

He is a member of the Purdy Separate Baptist Church.

The Goodins have two children, Jeremy Goodin, Columbia, KY; and Mariah Goodin Crowe, who lives in Indiana.

Goodin's sister, Marilyn Goodin Radford, is Director of Financial Aid at Lindsey Wilson College.

The newly named candidate already has opposition. Independent candidate Gene Dale Holmes, who garnerd almost 44% of the vote in a two way race with Roger Stephens, has already qualified to be on the Tuesday, November 6, 2007 general election ballot.

No decision final decision has come on a candidate for the Democrats, but the party has until August 14, 2007, at 4:00pm to file a candidate in the office of Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair.

No indication yet if Governor will name interim magistrate

Governor Ernie Fletcher could name an interim magistrate to sit on the court until Stephens successor is certified the victor in the fall election. So far, none of the party powers have been willing to offer an opinion as to whether or not he will take that action, or if they will ask him to do so.Court now meets with six membersWith the vacancy, the court now convenes with six magistrates, Second District Magistrate Wid Harris; and Third, Sammy Baker; Fourth, Perry Reeder; Fifth, Billy Dean Coffey; Sixth, Joe Rogers; and Seven, Terry Hadley. County Judge Executive Ann Melton is a member of the court, and could vote on every issue, but does not exercise that prerogative.
