CU hosts 1st wedding/car show event at July 4th celebration

By Linda Waggener, assistant director of university communications

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Summers chose to renew their wedding vows in an outdoor ceremony in front of Campbellsville University during the July 4th car show.

Gary said that his wife Connie wanted to have the special ceremony to mark their 25th anniversary. As they began to plan it, excitement about the annual holiday car show on the campus of CU made them think about the possibility of enjoying both events together.

"We were already scheduled to be in the car show," he said, "and the university is about the prettiest place in town, so we decided it would be the perfect place for our ceremony."

Keith Summers and Margo Sanders stood up with them just as they had 25 years ago. Their daughter Monica and her husband Jason were also part of the ceremony as were their children, Savannah, 7 who scattered flower petals along the walkway in front of the administration building, and baby Deven, 7 months, who rode in his decorated wagon.

After the ceremony the couple drove away in their '65 red Pontiac GTO convertible, restored in his Summer's Paint and Body Shop. He said that 25 years earlier they drove away from Miller park after their outdoor wedding in a car almost exactly like it.

Summers said he and his wife were grateful for the hospitality of the university and to fellow car enthusiast and CU professor Stan McKinney who helped them make connections for everything they needed for a perfect experience.
