Obituary: Lawrence Compton, 84, WWII veteran

Mr. Compton served for four years in Europe and Africa during World War II. He had moved to Illiinois to find work during The Migration. He had retired after 41 years in a leadership position, all with the same company there. He was the head of a large, respected family with deep roots in Southwestern Adair County, where his final resting place will be.
Lawrence Nell Compton, 84, Bridgeview, IL, formerly of Gradyville, KY, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at his home.

The funeral service will be Monday, July 16, 2007, at 11:00am CT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, with Bro. Elbert Hadley and Bro. Thomas Hill the officiating clergy.



He was the son of the late Leonard W. and Lula M. Moore Compton of Adair County, KY.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Emily Loy Compton, Bridgeview, IL, and the following:
  • One son: Larry Compton and his wife Melinda, Lockport, IL

  • One daughter: Karen Rains and husband, Bradley, Burbank, IL

  • Five grandchildren: Meleny Gunderson, Jamie Perino, Christine Davis, Revecca Compton, and Amy Compton

  • Three great grandchildren: Brittany Sherman-Rains, Pary's Jenie Sherman-Rains, and Robert Davis

  • And several nieces and nephews
Lawrence Compton was in the US Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He served in Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, and North Africa. He was retired from Sun Chemical, Chicago, IL, after 41 years of service as a foreman.

Interment will be in the Moore Cemetery.

The family requests visiting after 2:00pm CT, on Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY.
