Just a shell remains of Circle R

2007-07-10 - 712 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
At about 8:00pm last evening, just a shell of the building remained after a fire, which started in the rear of the restaurant, had damaged everything inside. All the windows on this side were blown out. From the front, there was little evidence of the disaster. A casual passerby might not have noticed anything out of the ordinary, as the restaurant, in the past weeks few weeks has been closed all day on Mondays.

Circle R Fire: But for now, there are only 100 Must Eat Places

2007-07-10 - 712 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
A brighter day: Just a little over one month ago, Gary P. West, author of "Eating Your Way Across Kentucky. 101 Must Places to Eat," visited one of them in Columbia this morning. For at least a while, his title might need a change, to "101 100 Must Places to Eat" following the Monday evening, July 9, 2007, fire. Above, the Bowling Green author was photographed with Sandy Ford, the restaurant's manager, on June 6, 2007.

Requiem, (until a resurrection?) for a landmark

2007-07-10 - 712 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
A PICTURE TAKEN through a blown out window on the west side of the Circle R wells up more than a half century of memories for Adair Countians, some old, some just created. This view is from the section first built as the Hilltop Cafe by the late Jessee Keith. On the far side is the Corner Table, an address third most recognizable in Adair County after the Square and the Fairgrounds. The Corner Table was a choice vantage point, which, in retirement years, was headquarters for Hudson Willis --Wain's famed 'Beanpole'-- who guarded his prize Ford Pinto from there. He would methodically tie to a drive-in canopy post when he dined there. And it was a vantage point to watch the Maestro, J.D. Harper, lovingly make the cash register sing, In between, memories of a server wearing a huge corage, a new one every day, which was outshone only by her bigger smile. Memories of Adair County's wonderful Brockman sisters, Peggy and Vonda, and the very popular, DeGary Bailey. And, in the center, the fallen "No Smoking" sign, which hung over the morning coffee table, where numerous packs were defiantly lit up by customers whose heritage endowed them with inalienable rights to smoke where they pleased. Whether the building can or will be restored or razed won't be known till later.
