Gene Dale Holmes first to file for District 1 Magistrate

Opposition candidates would be named by party process. Republicans set to make choice July Tuesday, July 16, 2007; Democrats studying race

By Ed Waggener

Gene Dale Holmes has filed as an independent candidate for Magistrate in District 1.

Holmes is the first candidate to qualify for the November 6, 2007 election. Holmes is a resident of Little Cake and a marketing manager for Miller Distributing Co., the sales arm of A-1 Gate Company.

According to the Adair County Court Clerk's office, Holmes' filing which was accompanied by a petition bearing at least 20 signatures, was complete complete and he will be on the November 6, 2007 General Election ballot. The district includes the precincts of Eunice-Pellyton, White Oak, and Little Cake.

Holmes is seeking the seat left vacant by Republican Magistrate Roger Stephens.

Candidates with party affiliations are to be nominated by party process. The Republican Party will meet Tuesday, July 16, at 6:00pm at the Adair Annex to select a candidate.

Democrats met Tuesday night, July 3, 2007. Those present of 18-member Adair County Democratic Committee discussed the race, but no definite decision was made to name a candidate, Executive Board Member Richard Lee Walker said. He did indicate that some Democrats have expressed an interest in the race but would not divulge their names. Travis Giles, former deputy Adair County PVA, had been ecnouraged to run as a Democrat, but, according to family members, is not inclined to make the race.

The district is heavily--almost 9 to one--Republican, but Democrats have carried it. In his first race for county judge, in 1985, Democrat Richard Lee Walker carried the all three precincts in the District, as did slate mates Willie Matt "Jr." Feese, for PVA, and Louis McQueary, for coroner.

On the Republican side, several have been mentioned as possible candidates, including Charles Shepherd, who was defeated by Roger Stephens in the 2006 primary. First District Constable Harold Burton is known to want the the prize, as is the man he defeated for magistrate, Bill Troutwine.

In the fall, 2007, election, Holmes polled almost 44% of the vote. It was a two way race, between Roger Stephens and Gene Dale Holmes. The vote was Roger Stephens, 538 votes, to Gene Dale Homes, 417.

Governor Ernie Fletcher could name an interim Magistrate to serve until the November 6, 2007, winner is certified, but both Republican Party Chairman Benton Fudge and Adair County CJE Ann Melton have said they do not expect him to do so.

The deadline for candidates to file for the office is August 14, 2007, at 4:00pm. Candidates for the office file at the office of Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair.
