Three companies look at Short Creek Bridge tear-out Earthworks, Egypt Construction, and Bill Greer company register By Ed Waggener If acceptable bids are received in the morning, work on the replacement of Short Creek Bridge on the Dunnville Road could start after the tear-out contract is award at a Special Called Fiscal Court meeting in the morning.A mandatory pre-bid conference was held Tuesday, July 3, 2007, for contractors to look at the scope of the tear-out of the Short Creek Bridge on the Dunnville Road. The current bridge is being replaced with emergency road funds authorized by Gov. Fletcher. A check for $78,865 was received, by Ann Melton, Adair County County Judge Executive, on Monday, July 2, 2007. Three firms registered at the pre-bid conference: Earthworks, Inc., of Russell County, the successful bidder on the Grassy Springs Bridge removal earlier this year; Egypt Construction Company, Columbia, KY; and Bill Greer, Inc., Knifley, KY. Earthworks was represented by Larry Carta; Egypt Construction by Barry Smith; and Bill Greer, Inc., by Greg Greer. The new span will be 24 feet wide by 30 feet long, with concrete siderails. The current bridge is 14 feet wide. Its steel railings are in a dilapidated condition. The narrow bridge is a problem when two cars meet there, and has been troublesome for farmers driving combines and other large pieces of equipment across it. Besides needing widening and needing better side rails, the bridge is also showing signs of decay, particularly in the wingwalls. The creekbed is dry now, giving little hint of ithe stream's ferocity at times. Larry Carta, one of the prospective contractors, said that, at times the stream flows over the Dunnville Road roadbed. He point to large rock in the creekbed as evidence of its power. "That rock is rip-rapping," he said, "It takes a lot of water pressure to move rock that size." The bridge is over a part of the stream about one-tenth mile from its confluence with Green River, at a point which is a favorite for white bass fishermen. At least two large sycamore trees will have to removed. The contractors were told that a dump site for the tear-out materials was available at Bobby Lee's on the road, but they had to option of taking it to other locations they make arrangements. CJE Administrative Assistant Lisa Lee said Thursday afternoon that no bids have yet been received. "That's not unusual," she said, "they usually bring them in right before the meeting." The bid opening is scheduled for Friday morning," July 6, 2007, at 9:00am. Road Closed signs erected, covered. The ACRD was erecting "Road Closed" signs on both ends of the Dunnville Road, and at crossroads including Damron's Creek Road, and at the Eunice-Dunnville Road. The signs will be covered until work actually begins on the tear-out. That could start as early as Saturday, July 7, 2007. The successful contractor will have until July 16 to complete the tear-out. At that time, the ACRD will take over the project, doing everything except mixing the concrete and placing the floor beams. See related story "Ann: Gov.
