On Monday, June 25, a group of forty-nine travelers from the local area as well as surrounding counties and states left Columbia for a trip to New York.

The group drove through Ohio and on into West Virginia where they spent the first night in the Wheeling/Triadelphia area. On the second day, they traveled through Pennsylvania on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and on to Carlstadt, New Jersey where they prepared for two full days in the Big Apple.

The first day in New York, Wednesday, June 27, the group boarded a New York coach and traveled through the Lincoln Tunnel which separates New Jersey from New York. The first stop was Ground Zero which is the site of the former Twin Towers. The group members saw first-hand the construction which is taking place for the rebuilding of the Towers.

After that, the group went to Battery Park and boarded the ferry over to Liberty Island which is home to the Statue of Liberty. The next stop was Ellis Island where immigrants landed after their long journey to America.

Planet Hollywood in Times Square was the destination for lunch. The restaurant founders included Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After lunch, the group then moved on to the next destination.

While driving through the city, they passed by the United Nations Building which is marked with the flags from various nations around the front of the building. The next stop was the Empire State Building. After riding the Skyride inside the building, they took two elevators to the observatory at the top for a breathtaking view of the city.

As the coach traveled out of the city to the hotel, everyone saw the masses of people on the sidewalk, in the well-known Yellow Cabs, on bikes, skateboards, and other methods of transportation. It takes a lot of coordination to move a population of over eight million people every day!

On Thursday, June 28, the group journeyed back into the city. The first stop was Central Park. Everyone enjoyed a carriage ride through this famous landmark. The next stop was lunch at Rockefeller Center and then an elevator/escalator ride to the Top of the Rock for another outstanding view of New York and surrounding areas. Rockefeller Center is home to NBC Studios where Dateline NBC, Saturday Night Live, and the Today Show are taped.

A driving tour of the city was next on the agenda. Members relaxed on the coach while touring such sites as Harlem (home of the Apollo Theater (where James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and Aretha Franklin got their start) and President Clinton's office building), Trump Towers, the location of the David Letterman show as well as the Regis and Kelly show, Radio City Music Hall, and the office building for O magazine (Oprah's magazine).

Hard Rock Caf in Times Square was the site for the evening meal. After everyone finished, they moved on to the evening's entertainmentthe fantastic Broadway show, "Beauty and the Beast."

The group then drove back through the Lincoln Tunnel and took one final look at the New York skyline. On Friday, June 29, it was time to start the journey home. The group traveled through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, and spent the night in Radford, VA. This hotel was where many parents and family members stayed after the Virginia Tech shootings which took place in April.

On Saturday, June 30, a tired, but happy group reboarded the coach and traveled through Tennessee and on home to Columbia, KY, with great memories from their trip to the Big Apple.
