From a spelling spider to man-eating, singing space plant, from a crazy country Christmas to musical pickpockets, and from a poignant tale of growing up in the country to a story of two brothers growing in the city in the 40s, there's a lot on the table for theater patrons to feast on this coming year. The Russell County Arts Council has announced an ambitious schedule of shows for the 14th season of Main Stage productions at the Star Theater in Russell Springs.

Season kicks of with "Charlotte's Web"

The six major shows begin with a Childrens Theater production of the classic story of "Charlotte's Web" in August.

A large all-kid cast will perform all the enchanting characters: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be "a true friend and a good writer."

Directed by Gary McGowan, "Charlotte's Web" plays August 4-5-11-12, 2007. Admission is $7, with 12 and under free when accompanied by a regular admission. Advance tickets are available from cast members or Grider Drug across the the theater.

Second production is "Little Shop of Horrors"

The second big production will be the hilarious musical comedy "Little Shop of Horrors," the story of a man-eating space plant that grows from a small pot until it fills the stage. The play features many great songs in the style of early 60s pop hits, and the plot is both fun and funny.

"Little Shop of Horrors" will play the last three weekends in October, 2007 a total of nine performances. It is a StarWorks production directed by Todd Wilson, who previously directed the Star musicals "The Sound of Music" and "The Music Man."Auditions for "Little Shop of Horrors" will be held on July 15, 2007.

Third Main State production is "Virgil's Christmas"

The third Main Stage production brings back the popular Sludge family in "Virgil's Christmas." The lovable bumpkins get involved in a house decoration contest and the usual mistaken mayhem breaks out.

"Virgil's Christmas" plays the first two weekends of December 2007, and will be directed by Mary McGowan, who also did the previous three "Virgil" plays at the theater over the past few years.

Fourth production is musical "Oliver!"

A major musical comes to life in February in a StarWorks production of "Oliver!"Based on the novel "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens, the big award-winning musical is packed with infectious songs and action, and the audience will leave the theater humming.

"Oliver!" won a Tony award for Best Original Music and the movie version captured six Academy Awards including Best Music. Performances will be the first three weekends in February for a total of nine performances.

It is directed by G.K. Gibson, who directed last February's $12,000 version of "Peter Pan" and previously directed "A Christmas Story" and "The Velveteen Rabbit." Auditions for the large cast - which includes 25 adults and that many children - will be conducted in mid-August.

Fifth production is drama "Bridge to Terabithia"

In April, the drama "Bridge To Terabithia" comes to the Star Main Stage. It tells the poignant story of 11-year-old Jess Aarons, who grows and matures when a girl from the city comes into his life. They have many adventures in the make-believe world of Terabithia, but also experience highs and lows in their real life as well.

"Bridge To Terabithia" will play the last two weekends in April 2008, with first-time directors to a major production Adam Redmon and Kyle Hadley. Both have had long histories with productions at the Star.

Sixth show of the 14th Season is Neil Simon's "Lost in Yonkers"

The sixth show of the 14th Season will be a Neil Simon comedy-drama, "Lost In Yonkers." Written by Simon in 1991, it is about a semi-dysfunctional family living in Yonkers during the second world war. When their father leaves to work for the war, brothers Jay and Arty are forced to live with their strict, overbearing German grandmother as well as their slightly slow, easily excitable Aunt Bella.

"Lost In Yonkers" will play May 31, 2008 and June 1-7-8, 2008 and is directed by Gary McGowan.

Shawn Samuell and Guests among other productions, in addition to Main Street ones

In addition to the Main Stage productions, a number of other events are already planned for the coming season, beginning with a big Variety Show at the Star on Saturday, July 14 featuring music and comedy skits.

Shawn Samuell and Guests will be a one-night-only musical event on September 8, 2007.

Tales of Russell County Ghosts will feature authors including Roberta Simpson Brown and Dr. Lynwood Montell on Mon., Oct. 29.

Star Radio Theater will present Bram Stoker's "Dracula" in a live performance on the Star stage on Halloween, performed as a 1930s radio program with live sound effects. It will be a free show and is a script by "A Christmas Story" and "Velveteen Rabbit" author Phil Grecian directed by G.K. Gibson.

A musical-skit Christmas variety show is planned on Dec. 15, which may also be a free show with optional donations to a charity.

Several rock bands have recently played in the adjacent Norfleet Gallery, also operated by the Arts Council, and an organization of Russell County artists is also underway.
