Cheathams have lush town garden, despite drought These High Street town gardeners know techniques for maintaining right amount of moisture With two photos By Barbara Armitage The Garden Club The newest traffic jam in Columbia may be behind Maurice and Juanita Cheathams home on South High Street, less than three blocks from the Columbia Square. Everyone who drives by seems to be fascinated by the lush green vegetable garden in their back yard. Maurice Cheathams garden is an oasis in the middle of a severe drought and with vegetable gardens drying up right and left I had to know his secret. Maurice and Juanita are both lifetime gardeners who have just celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in June. In their small backyard garden they raise corn, half runners, tomatoes, peppers and a host of other delicious edibles. Already this year Juanita is busy pickling and canning mostly as gifts for their children and friends. His secret? Maurice rakes the fall leaves from several large trees growing in his and his brothers yards into the garden each year and tills them in; its the added organic material that helps hold the moisture in the soil during the hot summers. Straw is used as mulch as the plants begin to grow to help control weeds and cool the soil. Maurice did confide in me that once this year he did drain the grandkids small wadding pool into the garden too because water is too precious to waste. The Garden Club meeting in July 2007 will include a trip to Betty Conns Worm Farm. Anyone interested in attending should meet at the Adair County Extension office 409 Fairgrounds St., Columbia on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 10:00am CT or call Barbara Armitage at (270)385-6076 for more information. The group will carpool from the extension office to Betty's. For other Garden Club stories, enter "Armitage" or "Garden Club" in the searchbox. This story was posted on 2007-06-30 16:25:37
