By Ed Waggener

Magistrates approved a request from County Court Clerk Sheila Blair to increase the compensation paid to property owners for precinct voting locations to $50 per precinct.

Previously, single precinct voting locations received $35, and locations with two precincts were limited to $60.

Now, the two precinct voting locations will receive $100. They are Columbia Church of the Nazarene's Wheet Fellowship Center, Columbia Baptist Church's Christian Life Center, the Davenport Family LIife Center at Trinity UMC, and A-1 Gate Company on Highway 206.

The rental is the same whether the county owns the voting places, as they do for Eunice-Pellyton and Little Cake, Gradyville, and White Oak, or the property owner provides the voting space, as is the case for the others. The vote to raise the rental was unanimous.

Second readings of budget matters unanimously approved

The meeting, held Thursday evening, June 28, 2007, at 5:00pm CT, was necessitated because second readings were required on two budget matters, approval of the regular budget for 2007 and 2008, and a second reading on a budget amendment.

Occasionally, CM would point out that Magistrates do not receive extra pay when additional meetings are held. Their salary is the same regardless of the number of meetings they attend.

"First and second readings must be in the same Fiscal Year," Judge Ann Melton explained, "that's why we had to have the meeting." In addition, she said, it is a good way to tidy up loose ends in a fiscal year and payment of some bills was also included.

Inmates will continue to maintain Annex Floors

The court had planned to consider a contract for upkeep on annex floors. But, after discussion, the Magistrates and Judge Melton decided to continue using Adair County Regional Jail inmates. "We'll monitor the work closely," she said later, "to make sure they stay in their present condition."

Meeting "short and sweet," lightly attended

"The meeting short and sweet," Lisa Lee said. It was also lightly attended, with Judge Ann Melton presiding and six of the seven districts represented. District 1 is currently vacant, following the resignation of Magistrate Roger Stephens, who was named to a Kentucky Highway Department post in the Permits Department at KHD District 8 headquarters in Somerset. Magistrates present were Wid Harris (2), Sammy Baker (3), Perry Reeder (4), Billy Coffey (5), Joe Rogers (6) and Terry Hadley (7); also present were Gale Cowan, Finance Officer; and Lisa Lee, Administrative Assistant to the Judge Executive, County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin, and Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair.

Representatives of the Adair Progress and Community Voice were present. Columbia-Magazine.com's story from information in interviews with Judge Melton and Administrative Assistant Lisa Lee.
