Krista first ever Lindsey golfer to qualify a USGA event!

Rising Lindsey Wilson College golf star sophomore Krista Burton, Jamestown, qualified for the 64-woman match play during the USWAPL.

By Chris Wells, LWC Sports Information Director

Lindsey Wilson rising sophomore Krista Burton competed in the 31st United States Women's Amateur Public Links Championships earlier this week at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, KY.

Burton was one of only three Kentucky women to qualify for the match play portion of the tournament and the first Lindsey Wilson golfer to qualify for a USGA event.

Burton, a Jamestown, KY, native, reached the round of 64 following two days of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.

The NAIA individual national champion fired a two-day total of 151 (76-75) over the 6,125-yard, par 72 links course.

Burton tied for 44th to advance to Wednesday's first round of match play as the field was reduced from 154 to 64.

Burton -- the tournament's No. 52-seed -- faced No. 13-seed Jane Chin of Huntington Beach, Calif. Chin shot a 144 (73-71) in the two-round qualifier.

Chin took advantage of Burton's four straight bogeys to open the round and led 3-up after four holes.

Chin increased her lead to 5-up through the front nine before Burton won the par-4 10th hole to cut the deficit to 4-up.

Chin regained the 5-up lead with a win on the par-4 11th. The pair halved the next three holes and Chin secured the 5&4 match play win.

The United States Women's Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships hosted by the United States Golf Association.
