Adair GOP may name 1st District nominee next week

Democrats may name a candidate for District 1 Magistrate; independent would need only 20 qualified petition signature to be on fall ballot

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Republican Party Chairman Benton Fudge said that the party executive committee will likely meet the week of June 25 to name the party's nominee to run for magistate in District 1.

But Democratic Party Chairman Evelyn Phelps that the Democrats have not yet set a date to make a nomination for a candidate to replace Republican Magistrate Roger Stephens, who resigned to take a job with the Kentucky Highway Department in Somerset.

Nominees for the major parties are selected by party process, but independent candidates have a very simple route to get on the ballot. All an independent needs is 20 qualified petition signatures to be on the November 6, machine face.

The deadline for filing in the Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair's office is August 14, 2007, at 4:00pm CT.

Fudge said that the decision for the Republicans will be made by a four-member executive committee, on which he serves along with Lisa Lee, Tim Bradshaw, and Jason Cross.

So far, he said, two individuals, Bill Trautwein and Charles Shepherd, have contacted him seeking the party's blessing.

Chairman Phelps said that, so far, she hasn't had any Democrat to inquire, but expects to find a qualified candidate for the post.

District 1, which includes the precincts of Eunice-Pellyton, White Oak, and Little Cake, is about 10-1 Republican.

In the election in 2005, Roger Stephens beat Charles Shepherd in the Republican primary and Gene Dale Holmes, who ran as an independent.

A call has been placed to Holmes, who was unavailable for an interview at the time.

Both Chairman Fudge and Judge Melton said they do not expect Gov. Fletcher to name an interim Magistrate, who would serve until the November election is certified.
