2007 LWC Tennis student-athletes among nation's best

Fadzai Mawisire, and Natalia Yakimovich finished as ITA's third ranked women's doubles team

Ten Lindsey Wilson College men's and women's tennis student-athletes were among the top-50 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association final poll released this week.

All six Lindsey Wilson women are ranked in the NAIA ITA women's top-50 singles.



Lindsey Wilson junior Candela Castanon led the way with a No. 4 singles ranking.

Castanon, a three-time NAIA First-Team All-American, finished an injury-plagued season with a 5-5 record playing as the Blue Raiders' top singles player.

Sophomore Natalia Yakimovich, who joins Castanon as a First-Team All-American, finished ranked No. 7 after finishing 10-4 playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions.

Sophomore Fadzai Mawisire, a Second-Team All-American, earned a No. 11 ranking after going 7-1 in singles play playing primarily from the No. 2 slot.

Freshmen Jessica Weyreuter (33rd) and Agnieszka Wojtowicz (38th) and senior Zuzana Rakyta-Komendakova (39th) also earned top-50 rankings for their play during the season.

The duo of Yakimovich and Mawisire finished the season ranked No. 3 in doubles.

The pair finished with a 15-1 record playing as the team's top doubles team. The pair has a career doubles record of 38-2 over the last two seasons.

Castanon and Weyreuter are ranked No. 7 in the ITA's final doubles rankings. The pair finished with a 15-2 record on the season.

The Lindsey Wilson women's team (19-5) ended their season for the second straight year in the national semifinals.

On the men's side, senior Pablo Castanon earned a No. 16 singles ITA singles ranking.

The four-time All-American ended the season with a 10-2 singles record playing as the top-ranked singles player.

Freshman Freddy Luciani, a first-team All-American, finished ranked No. 18 by the ITA. He ended the season with a 15-1 record playing primarily from the No. 2 spot.

Senior Leandro Gubler is ranked No. 41 after finishing with a 9-4 record playing from the No. 3 singles.

Castanon and Gubler earned a No. 6 ranking in ITA's doubles following a 9-7 record from the No. 1 doubles.

The duo of Luciani and sophomore Eduard Khan are ranked No. 19 following a 17-4 record playing from the No. 2 spot.

The Lindsey Wilson men (15-6) ended their season in the quarterfinals losing to eventual national champion Auburn University-Montgomery.
