2007 Russell Creek Tractor Show: Biggest ever!

Over a dozen photos, by Sean Hitchcock, Joe Hare, and Ed Waggener, accompany story
By Sean Hitchcock

MILLTOWN, KY. Hundreds of people from all around Kentucky brought their tractors and families to Adair County Saturday, June 16, to enjoy the 2007 Russell Creek Antique Tractor and Gasoline Engine Show held at Garrison Construction Company.

A record of 141 entries dating back to 1927 were on display at this years eleventh annual event that included a tractor parade, freshly made food, and a little friendly competition.

The weather was perfect for the event, with a gentle breeze and mostly 70's temperatures. The crowd was estimated at 400-500; over 200 visitor cars were parked in lots around the Garrison Construction grounds, residences, and farm land. The complex has more the appearance of Kentucky State Park than a building contractor's headquarters.

Weve had a lot of good people participate this year, and its also the biggest event weve ever had, Event host and owner of Garrison Construction Company Lewis Garrison said.

Were not trying to make money, we just like to see the people come out and have a good time. Its the biggest reason for holding the Event; and its what were all about, he added.

Garrison said he decided to host the annual event because the tractor show that used to be held in Columbia was discontinued.

A few friends of mine were talking about starting a tractor show after Columbia quit holding one. I said, lets have it here; and thats where it all started, Garrison said.

In addition to the legendary tractor parade that stretches a circle around Garrisons Pond, many people also took part in testing their tractor-driving skills in contests such as the barrel roll, egg-on-spoon race, the slo-go race and the ball in bucket competition.

Food, the mainstary of any Adair County get-together, was catered by barbecuer Jimmy Johnson and crew, who had long lines at their improvised cookhouse most of the day.

Children also took delight in some friendly competition with their own pedal-powered tractor pull in which they pull a sled of weight behind them.

2007 Russell Creek Tractor Show: 1937 International Truck

2007-06-15 - Lewis Garrison Place, 7 miles N. of Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Lewis Garrison crosses the bridge across an inlet on the 3 acre lake at his place on KY 61 near Clay Ridge in a 1937 International 1 1/2 ton stake truck. The truck was originally sold by Van Cleeve Motors in Campbellsville. After getting new paint by Dwayne Corbin and Johnny Wayne Keltner, a restored bed by Joe Coffey with oak stakes finished by Bradshaw Cabinet. Father and son Andy and Charles Collins did the fantastic job of restoring all the mechanical parts. The truck was made to look like new with other finishing touches by Lewis Garrison himself. The bridge is one Garrison moved from Summer Shade in Green County. Already, with only a half-dozen or so outside tractors on the grounds, there are about 75 on display. Tomorrow, Saturday, June 16, 2007, the number will double or triple, Garrison expects, when the 11th Annual Russell Creek Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Show gets underway early in the morning at Garrison Construction Co.

2007 Russell Creek Tractor Show: Just a few

2007-06-16 - Adair County - Photo the Old Coddger. Just a few of the many tractors on display today. Most of these belong to the show's host, Lewis Garrison, who had over 70 tractors on display, but that number was more than doubled by show time, Saturday, June 16, 2007. The event is proving an annual boon to the Adair County economy. Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce President Darrell Overstreet was beaming. Not only does the Garrison's show feature many International products Overstreet's family used to sell along Super Chief Pontiacs and GMC trucks at their Overstreet & Rice dealership on Greensburg Street between Paull & Marshall Streets, in Columbia, but it also brings hundreds of people to Adair County. With tourism a major component of the Chamber's economic program, a show like the Russell Creek Antique Gas Engine & Tractor Show, becomes more and more a factor in tourism.
